In March, the Clintonville Area Commission voted unanimously to nominate Clintonville for consideration as a Google gigabit-per-second fiber-to-home test community.

A website supporting the nomination has been launched at: https://sites.google.com/site/gfforclintonville/

How can you help?

Visit the Google Fiber for Clintonville Website

Click the "Nominate your community" button
Sign in with your Google Account or, underneath that window, create an account (itÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s easy!)

Fill in the one-page questionnaire

Cities across the country have gone gaga for Google with crazy glasses, shark tanks and glow sticks.

Today is the deadline for residents and cities to nominate their communities for a free Google test program that would install broadband fiber systems, increasing average residential Internet speeds 100-fold.

I am a digital advocate and willing to say the unpopular. Like though I support third frontier, it really supports research departments much more than actual entrepreneurs.

Also, I am glad Columbus jumped on the bandwagon for google fiber a week before the deadline. It just seems like too little too late. When I asked a TechColumbus official if they would recommend that the city go for it (on Feb 18 at the Entrepreneurs forum at the Statehouse), he said the claims that high speed internet will bring jobs are unfounded/questionable and that turning on fiber, doesn't necessarily mean it will attract companies. (Nice spokesperson for innovation. Personally, I think TechColumbus is a little too cozy with Time Warner.)

Which brings me to the reason for my post... Could this video be any more generic? http://googlumbus.com/

Where are the geeks pecking away at keyboards and mobile devices? It is a fabulous portrayal of our cultural and entertainment offerings, but it's lack of depicting people using a device which actually uses said bandwidth, seems off the mark. To me the glossy prepared piece, says more about our wanna-be status than actually bolstering our 'up and coming tech city' reputation.

ETA: I just spotted a laptop at 2:44.

Also, check out the map of where it was requested. Ohio is screaming for bandwidth. Google Post

Thanks for posting that video Walker. I wonder why they didn't post that on http://googlumbus.com/ as well.

I am a Coleman fan, so I am glad to see this personal plea. I just feel like it is one more example of an initiative coming from a few voices, instead of a groundswell of support.

Looks like the video was posted on the last day, maybe it was on the Columbus.gov site before that?

byJody, the Mayor Coleman video is posted to the googlumbus site, though it is on the "Local Video and Links" page. Perhaps it should be the lead video instead. I have seen questions raised about the googlumbus site on several messsage boards, maybe it is not too late to retool it to address some of the concerns.

As I worked to pull together the information for Clintonville's response, I was put in contact with the group that was drafting Columubus' response. I thought that the response itself was very well focused and made a very compelling case for the region's research, entrepreneurial, and residential demand for higher speed internet.

I was encouraged by Google's blog post, which showed the central Ohio region as one of the few in the country with both a large number of governmental response as well as large numbers of individual responses.
