Has anyone tried Gooeyz grilled cheese restaurant that recently opened in the South Campus Gateway in the spot where The Happy Greek used to be? The Other Paper and The Columbus Alive both had some pretty good-sounding reviews of the place and I'm curious if anyone's checked it out yet.

Ugh. I feel like this concept is going to be stolen from Melt and run ad nauseum. I don't know if Melt invented it, btw, but they perfected it and should own it.

I was on the fence about it. The food was good, but I'm not sure it was good enough to make me go back. The concept is decent, but I can make similar dishes at home cheaply, so my incentive to become a regular is limited. It's at least vegetarian-friendly, even if it's a no-go for vegans.
I have a few pics and descriptions here.

I saw this place last night leaving the movies and had no idea what it was. HAD I KNOWN it was grilled cheeses I would have made JimL2 slow his roll and stop in. Now it will be another year before I am back in the Gateway and I'll completely forget about it. Stooooopid.

They have a standard array of micros on tap, plus a full bar. Between them and Mad Mex, you should be able to find SOMETHING to drink, I'm sure.

They are still in "soft opening" phase, but unlike Knead (who incidentally makes a superior grilled cheese) the food wasn't discounted. The menu was organized in a way that seems kinda hard to navigate, but covers a fair number of bases. Service was good in the face of adversity (each order had to be relayed through the food manager to the kitchen), quality and price was pretty good. I got a 9 grain with pepper cheese, bacon, jalapenos, roasted red pepper, pickles and chipotle mayo and tomato basil soup-a yooey (diy). Bar upstairs seems o.k.-Dead Guy was the only micro, but the bar manager is planning to add more. Everything is poured into a plastic cup (eww), but glassware is supposedly coming. Overall, I'd prefer a grilled cheese panini @ Gallo's, but Gooeyz is within walking distance and the kids thought it was the best grilled cheese ever!

Ugh. I HATE the word "gooey." Not an appetizing name IMHO.

That is worth a lot.

Just got back from there.
Decent sandwich. Though, I almost didn't want to judge it b/c the sandwich definitely suffered in my 15 minute walk back to my office as I didn't have enough time to eat it there. But it's decently prepared, there's lots of ingredient selections and god it's just something other than a freaking burger. I had a BLT on house bread with tziziki sauce (sure why not) and I'd get it again as long as I could eat it there. The house bread is kind of a fluffy egg/potato bread, it gets my bread obsessive seal of approval.
Oh and the seasoned fries are really good, which I was not expecting.
Talked to one of the owners for a bit, he seemed like a nice guy and said he wanted to have live music upstairs a whole bunch, which is pretty awesome because what's the nearest live venue around there, Oldfields? Ugly Tuna Abducta Saloona's cover bands don't really count. And there's Newport, but that's like comparing a schooner and the USS Nimitz, totally different goals of the places.
So yeah, I think they've got a shot at things, mostly. Mostly. Though, it is too bad they spent a bunch of money on a huge sign, because man that name ♫suuuuuu-uuuuuuuuuccckkkkkks♫. I'm a giant man-child who just bought himself another Optimus Prime toy days ago, and yet I felt 100x less mature when I was ordering a "you-ie gooey".

I'm looking forward to a late lunch there today.
The owner, Dave Bennett has been working tirelessly to get this off the ground, I'm so happy to see they've opened. I'm excited for this place and wish Dave and his entire team the best.

My favorite restaurant up here in Akron is The Lockview, both because it's within walking distance of my apartment and because they've got more than 100 different craft brews to go along with those gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. And sweet potato fries, albeit not quite as yummy as the Lessner kind. (That still leaves room for ample yumminess, however.)

I have been to Gooeyz several times and love, love, love it! I don't live close but work downtown. It has been worth the drive. Those that are saying that they have taken another places concept, does that mean if you open a hamburger joint you are ripping off McDonalds?
Anyway, it's cool that they are so close to the parking garage (which is only a $1 an hour). The sandwiches are supurb, my fav being the turkey with artichoke spread, spinach and tomato, to die for!! And since the first time I was there they have added a half sandwich to the menu which is great because they are HUGE! I was also there one night for the entertainment upstairs at what they are calling the Hideout. Acoustic music, great sound and the bartenders were terrific. Full bar and I too heard that they are adding additional beer soon.
Check it out, it will become your newest late night crave :)Posted 1 year ago # -
Ugh. Seriously. It sounds like a good joint, but the stuff like the previous post (employee, friend, owner) always turns me off. It's just so... desperate.
