There are actually a lot of city lots for lease (I think it's like $1 a year or something) and thought of converting one into a small 'dog park', although it would be easier to go to an established park.

It looks like there are many good things to happen to the area, it's really a matter of time waiting it out (like victorian village, german village, merion village etc). I guess time will be the tell all.
There are tax exemptions for 10 years for the KLD which is nice. If you haven't seen, http://development.columbus.gov/NeighborhoodsandResidents/housing/homeowner/NIDS/ddrti.asp

Anaerobia wrote Thanks, Walker. I've been finding out about a lot of local information on the board here. There is a lot of good interaction.
I am trying to find if there are any dog parks near the KLD as I have a puppy that needs his fill of daily exercise and I don't know how much I will be walking him in the neighborhood, especially after viewing crime reports in the area http://www.columbuspolice.org/Reports/StepOne.aspx.
The neighborhood still has a ways to go but it seems like it has impetus with all of the condo projects happening, including the Monroe on Long. I found it interesting after driving the neighborhood a few nights ago that the huge new brick office/retail space at Hamilton and Long has not even one business in it right now. Seeing this makes me somewhat skeptical of the retail space they are proposing to building at Monroe and Long. By the way, I went to a meeting Dec 8th with people in the neighborhood and the developer. Locals were not at all happy with the proposed architectural plans. I believe it's going back to a design meeting with local commissioners and homeowners before any building get's started. The developer said that he is not planning on building the retail spaces on Monroe until the 11 town homes on Monroe sell, at a whopping $265,000 each!
Did some more digging on the crime in the area. I did a quick comparison of my neighborhood (goodale park) vs KL district. In the last seven days there has been 8 theft/burglaries in goodale park area vs 9 theft/burglaries in KL district. Prety compariable and doesn't make me queezy about the area. Plus most of the theft occured in vacant buildings. However there has only been 1 assault in the last seven days in the goodale area vs 4 in the KL district. That makes me a little nervous, but after reading the nature of most of the assaults it looks like they are kids vs kids walking home from school..... not that it makes it any better. I realize this is only a brief snapshot (seven days). Anyone know where to get more comprehrensize crime data than the above link???

I wouldn't mind living here.
Seems a tad pricey for being all boarded up, but I like that someone hasn't already F*ed it up with their design sensibility. I wonder what it being on the Historic register would do to limit what you can do to the interior/exterior?
You should have a CU meet up in the KLD, Walker.

Yeah, I'd guess that the Historical Registry knocks the price up a bit and the fact that there are quite a few nice big homes right around it on Hamilton between Broad & Long probably inflates it a bit too.

The Register regulates the exterior appearance of the building. The expectation is that you would try to maintain the exterior in its historic appearance-- maintain the exterior elements, or if features are damaged or deteriorated, replace them in-kind (i.e. the same size, design, color, and materials.) Owners are not *required* to replace missing historic elements; however, if you propose to replace a feature that was once a historic part of the building... for example, a porch that may have been taken off years ago... the new feature should be replaced to replicate the original. If you don't know what the original looked like, you should use examples from the area to replicate the style. Again, that is for missing original architectural elements.
New additions can be made. They should blend in with the historic building, but not exactly match the historic building, and should allow the historic building to be most prominent. (i.e. don't plan to enclose your front porch to install a new bathroom, plan instead to construct a new addition off the rear of the house.)
Interiors are not typically regulated.

Has anyone on the Near East Side tried out the new Chinese place at Parsons and Broad? I've been hearing that it could give Happy Dragon a run for its money. When I drove by last night, they parking lot was full in front and along the side of the building.

Went to Creole Kitchen for the first time in months last night. It is so damn good and so damn cheap.

I hadn't seen this map before, but gives a good outline of the boundaries of this neighborhood and identifies where the new developments are located:

I like the colored dots over the antique brown background. Very cute map. Much better than that crappy River South map you posted.
May I add that Monday Night Ride frequents the KLD, maybe we will pay you a visit?
