Looking to get involved in your community? Meet new people? Do something GOOD?

Then please join us on May 8th, from 9am until 12pm, for Goodale Park's Annual Planting Day.

Flowers and plants are ready to go - we just need your help to make it happen. This is a great opportunity to spend a few hours outdoors, connect with Mother Earth, and help keep Columbus's oldest (and best) city park looking fantabulous!

Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing (we'll be playing in the dirt!). Also, if you have extra garden tools that we can use for the day, please bring them. Upon arrival, please check in at the shelter house in the center of the park.

Even if you can only make it to the park for an hour, we welcome the help!

Goodale could use a good lawn service. It hasn't been moved in 2 weeks. Not so beautiful right now.

Lawn mowing in the park is handled by the city. Cutbacks in the city budget have resulted in a lower frequency of mowing since last year. This is simply the reality of the city's current budget and priorities on where to spend the money. Unfortunately, Rec and Parks has seen regular budget cuts even before the last year's financial issues. The parks department does an amazing job on very limited resources.

Mostly, the dandelion flowers grow quickly, and these make the lawn look tall and unkempt (they are much taller than the grass itself). I hope you can look past the dandelions and enjoy the park :)

Also, mowing is completed in stages. It usually takes a few days to mow the entire park. As of this afternoon, there is just one section (on Park St) that has yet to be mowed. Park is looking good!

I'm looking forward to Planting Day on Saturday! The last volunteer day was a lot of fun! The sun will be shining, but it's supposed to be chilly so bring your jackets. Would it be a mistake to bring my dog? Let me know!

While dogs are absolutely welcome in Goodale Park, our volunteers generally don't bring dogs with them to volunteer work days. If you do decide to bring your dog, please respect the rules of the park (there's a board with dog rules listed in the area between the shelter house and the north entrance of the park), please make sure that you keep a good eye on your dog, and also make sure to pick up after the dog. I love my German Shepherd, and he's very well-behaved, but I know that some people can be frightened of large dogs, so I keep him at home. Just something to be aware of.
