I have a friend who can't eat gluten who comes to town fairly frequently. We've had good luck with places like Sage, which make almost everything to order and are very flexible. She also calls ahead to ask if the restaurant can accommodate her gluten allergies--if they sound clueless, she doesn't go. We had dinner at Nida's Thai on High the other night, and the chef there made her meal without soy sauce (which can contain gluten) but she had to ask for this specifically. I think almost any Mexican restaurant will make you plain rice and substitute corn for wheat tortillas, so that's an option as well.

I thought I would revive this thread to see if there were any other suggestions. I have to begin a four week trial next week to see if I have celiac and it is a little overwhelming.

Someone recently asked me for recommendations of gluten free restaurants in Columbus. I pointed them to this thread and also asked Dr Elena. I thought I would post her response here as it might be useful for others looking for gluten free options.
Most restaurants have gluten free choices, not all advertise but most know the difference if asked.
Many of the mid-level and high-level chains in town have gluten free menus. This includes the Cameron Mitchell restaurants (including fish market), PF Chang’s, Ruby Tuesday’s, and pizza joints (Mellow Mushroom, Z-Pizza, Mama Mimi’s)
Most of the independents also have gluten free options either expressly stated (like Pistacia Vera stating it on the cards and Nida’s has a “g†on the gf menu items) or are more than familiar with the issue (like Jeni’s staff can all quickly recite which sandwiches are gf). Luce in Powell has a spectacular attitude – they have gluten free pasta available to have with any dish except the pre-made ones like lasagna. Skillet has been really accomodating by keeping gf pancake mix around. Spinelli’s has gf bread available for any sandwhich. Dosa corner and Maza have been accomodating. Liz Lessner’s restaurants and Basi have several options and have good customer service that make it easy. Dirty Franks’s even has lettuce and gf wraps on the menu.
Some ethnic eats (particularly middle eastern and Indian) are really responsive and will readily steer you clear. The best ones have been Banana Leaf and Tadka who have created entire menu dishes specially gf.

I don't know how common gluten reactions are (I personally don't know anyone who has that allergy or illness) but I think it's great that so many places -- and such a wide range of places -- are sensitive to it and offer alternatives.

Also know a few others who avoid wheat ( along with white rice ) as a way to avoid simple carbs.
