Glen Echo Ravine clean up, anyone?

Last week I walked through Glen Echo Ravine for the first time this year and the amount of garbage in the ravine was shocking.

Is anyone aware of plans for an upcoming clean up? I e-mailed Friends of the Ravine but haven't heard back. There aren't any events scheduled on their site for this year, or on the cleantheravine.blogspot. It looks like cleantheravine did a clean up in May last year so I'm going to check with them too to see if something is planned for this May again. Just thought I'd see if any Clintonville-ians were more in the know about official plans.

Failing that I may try to organize my own or at least make it a personal hobby to head down and clean up a bit on my own. In that respect I could use some tips (paging Anne!!). Tools of the trade, hazards, do you separate trash from recycling, where to dump all of this stuff, etc.

I'll post back about what I hear and my personal plans if anyone's interested in joining.

You can sign up for equipment at Keep Columbus Beautiful.
You have to pick up the tools, but it is free to use them. You bag up the trash and then put it at a specified site and I think they send a truck to go pick it up. You can work with them to get the best pickup site.
They also have a list of upcoming events on their site, but I didn't see one listed for Glen Echo.

The ravine is in bad shape. I would love to see Glen Echo Ravine get an email list together, keep us posted on your efforts so we can help.

Glen Echo is a designated worksite for Picture This 09. I encourage everyone to volunteer somewhere, but Glen Echo could certainly use everyone's help and enthusiasm.

And yes, they're targeting nearly every park and ravine you could think of so pitch in and pick one close to you.

That's awesome to hear about the clean-up. We would love to help - we live just a block south of it, and love walking down there with our dog. It is too bad that it gets trashed like that.

And the last time we were down there, there was a huge pipe (sewer, I think) running across the length of it. Is it still there? Anyone know if they plan to move it soon, or what exactly it's doing there?

The pipe is a temporary sewer line while they work on the actual sewer. It's still there. Once the work is done, the ravine water will lose it's foul odor since sewage will no longer overflow into the stream. That August ravine stench will be no more!

The Glen Echo Neighborhood Association is planning an earth day clean-up of the Ravine. Here is the information from the newsletter which was distributed yesterday:

Glen Echo Neighbors and United Crestview Area Neighborhood are host organizations for the annual Glen Echo Park/Ravine clean-up this Saturday, April 4/17. Work hours are from 9 a.m. until noon. If you have waders, wear them. Work gloves, trash bags, and E-Z reachers will be provided. The Clintonville Community Market is donating refreshments. Register the event at update2010.org if you haven't done so already, you might get more people. Your volunteer total and trash bag count would go toward the city-wide totals for the weekend.
