Mayor Launches GetActiveColumbus Website to Promote Healthy, Fun Activities
Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman today launched a new website that will offer Columbus and Central Ohio residents a user-friendly online source to find fit and fun activities for families. Joined by Columbus Blue Jackets Coach Scott Arniel, former Ohio State Buckeye wide receiver Dimitrious Stanley, former Buckeye quarterback Stanley Jacksonâ€â€and Stingerâ€â€Coleman said http://www.GetActiveColumbus.com will make it easier for residents of all ages to live healthy, active lifestyles.

“GetActiveColumbus.com gives young people and families important information they need to be physically active, to eat healthier foods, and to have fun,†says Mayor Coleman. “It’s one more tool we have to fight childhood obesity so all kids grow up healthier and happier.â€Â
GetActiveColumbus highlights neighborhood parks and recreation centers, neighborhood walking maps, healthy and affordable recipes, and a calendar of events. It also features fitness tips from Mayor Coleman, Ohio State University President Gordon Gee, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, 10TV personalities Andrea Cambern and Angela Pace and other local celebrities. A map tool will help users to locate city activities and locations by neighborhood, quadrant of the city, address and zip code. Featured content on the website will range from 100 ideas for summer activities, fitness tips and workout routines to recipes for nutritious, convenient and affordable meals and healthy snacks and farmers market locations in Central Ohio.
“Almost half of local fifth-graders are overweight, and unless we reverse this trend, today’s children will have a shorter lifespan than their parents,†says Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Teresa C. Long. “Thanks to this site, residents and visitors now have another information tool to get moving and eat healthier foods in one convenient location.â€Â
GetActiveColumbus includes links to information from Columbus Public Health programs such as Creating Healthy Communities, Healthy Children/Healthy Weights, Healthy Places and the Institute for Active Living serves as another tool to provide ideas that get youth and families moving. It will include information about bicycle safety, the city’s Bicentennial Bikeways Plan, and ways to participate in the Franklin County Physical Activity Plan. The programs are for everyone, from early childhood through adulthood. GetActiveColumbus will evolve to include links and information about non-profits, sports leagues and facility rental details.
