The flyer says the city's largest yard sale...
ETA (because I broke CU):
I would expect to see a mix of people, items available, etc. If you want to sell antiques, sell antiques. Even Antiques Roadshow has total crapola on it sometimes!!

yeah, I don't know that what I heard was fact, but seemed reasonable considering how controlling GVS can be.
I do know lots of people just go and get all the stuff the sellers throw out at 3. I guess they don't feel like dragging it to goodwill so they just throw out what they don't sell. I've known people who get their items that way.
It's nothing sad as a flea market - 3 buckets of doll torsos for $5, but there is a huge variety, from really nice furniture to books to household items.
Yeah, it's everything. There will certainly be people there with an interest in antiques and the means to purchase them.
I've participated in Village Valuables for the last few years... volunteered for the GVS one year, walked around looking two other years...
You'll see just about everything for sale... from expensive items to items for a quarter.
There aren't any regulations on flea markets in the neighborhood, but I think most people don't have very big yards or garages (or houses for that matter) so it makes sense to wait until there is a critical mass of people in order to make it worthwhile. There are THOUSANDS of people walking around the neighborhood, and stuff really does sell.
I don't have that much stuff... I mostly wanted to sell an old microwave that I had in the basement, but I ended up giving it to a friend of mine last week.

I've found it works best if you just try to get rid of some stuff and make a little cash, instead of treating it like a miniature antique store.I'm confused then.
Is it people looking to buy antiques or a village wide garage sale?
Obviously you can sell whatever you want–i've just noticed at the GV sale in particular some people tend to price their stuff as if they were trying to run a business, not clean out the house & make a few bucks at the same time. But it certainly makes for an eclectic assortment of items for sale. Who knows, maybe it's just me…I tend to price things to sell & irrationally expect everyone else to follow suit.
Blammo, as you said, the GV sale always seems to be slightly schizophrenic: apartment dwellers trying to clear out everything before they move with an EVERYTHING MUST GO attitude, contrasting with the little old lady selling a plastic flower arrangement for serious cash.
My one regret... one of my neighbors was selling a Victorian marble topped side table for like $40. It was a steal.
My favorite snags from the GV sales past were:
a battery-powered amplified electric guitar (with built-in speaker!) for $20…they sell for $300 new, but this one was left behind & reminded the seller of her ex-boyfriend. I also got a Bob Dylan songbook for a quarter.
I bought a 700 watt bass amplifier from John Zuck, a local legend bass-wise. $100! I used that thing for every gig for the next 5 years.
I guess what makes it so eclectic is (as Ms. Square said) some people are having the sale because they NEED to get rid of some stuff, & the timing is perfect. Others couldn't care less if they sell anything but figure while everyone's in the neighborhood, they might as well stick a price out there & see if anyone bites. It's always a fun time, but having just moved & having neither the money, room or desire to acquire any new objects, I'm going to have to pass.
my best deal from there was a three piece set of hard luggage for a bmw motorcycle for $50. I turned around and sold 'em for about $450.
I'm looking for a nice blender. Send me a message if you see one.
I'll be selling a whole bunch of my DVDs over at Drew's yard o' crap.
"Drew's yard o' crap" made me laugh so hard my pilates injury flared back up and now I'm crying. Thanks a lot RoRo!! :P
