Fracking is coming to Ohio. Learn all about it.
The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of “fracking†or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas†just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown.
Followed by a discussion panel consisting of Matt Trokan from the Sierra Club and other fracking experts.
Admission is only $5 (proceeds to Sierra Club and the CIFVF)

Chemicals Were Injected Into Wells, Report Says
WASHINGTON  Oil and gas companies injected hundreds of millions of gallons of hazardous or carcinogenic chemicals into wells in more than 13 states from 2005 to 2009, according to an investigation by Congressional Democrats.
GASLAND is misleading and in some cases ignores the results of sound scientific study. First of all, hydrofracing does not contaminate groundwater. Secondly, while SOME of the hazards Fox points to in the film, while worthy of consideration and regulation, are grossly overstated (and BTW, have NOTHING to do with hydrofracing). Finally, I love people who go out of their way to ID problems without presenting workable alternatives.
The development of O&G resources provide much larger benefits to our economy and standard of living than problems. So take away O&G and what do we have to replace it? Wind & solar will NOT come close to filling the void, not for decades, if ever in places like Ohio. We need ENERGY TODAY and we need JOBS TODAY. We also need to do something about our trade imbalance today. Shale gas development can make significant positive contributions to all three of these local and national needs. With sound practices, regulation and oversight, shale gas can be developed in ways that does not result in environmental damage and degradation.
Josh Fox's agenda lies beyond the simple, folksy, question-pursuing persona he poses as in his film. This film is not scientific, not balanced, and not objective; it's a tool.
