Just bought megabus tickets to Pittsburgh on a whim since their service just launched and they still have $1 tickets available:

So... what's fun in Pittsburgh? I imagine we'll be staying in/near Downtown and looking for family-friendly things since all four of us are going.

From the family to-do side of things,
Warhol Museum.
Carnegie Museum (in Oakland, easy bus) - which is quite awesome. (I lived there as a kid at times as my Dad was adjunct researcher. I can still smell preserved bird specimens in my head.)
Buhl Planetarium/Science Museum. (Big thumbs up from Alec.)
Aviary.
Zoo. (is out of the way, but they had these wiggle cars that Alec loved at Desi's age.)

there's carnegie science center (kind of like cosi), andy warhol museum, duquesne incline (a cable car that goes up the hill, pretty awesome), great shopping and restaurants on carson street--there are tons of independent businesses in the city.

Right, that is what it is called now. The Buhl is part of it.
When I was a kid, it was the highlight of the holiday season to visit the Buhl for the train exhibit. Now it is nearly year-round with a brief closure right before holiday time.
The Strip is great. Worth going to, but can be really tiring for little ones. (Experience talking.) However, they can easily be bribed w/ something from the chocolate shop. Wholly's Fish Market with the overhead train too.

Oh I hear ya, but it would just be a one nighter for us to a baseball game so if hotels are outrageous, the cost/benefit to just drive and come back after the game outweigh the $4 bus tickets :)

+1 on the Warhol, Carnegie Museum (dinosaurs!!), Zoo and Science Center.
Inclines are fun; so is walking on the South Side or the Strip.
Church Brew Works is a cool place with decent food (although after being raised Catholic, seeing tanks on the altar is odd).
Phipps Conservatory is similar to our Franklin Park:

I like going there and then having a picnic on the one of the hills by Carnegie Mellon (just up the street). Schenley Park is beautiful too.

I like that hotel across the river from the stadium, where those trains keep going by and they have those amphibious vehicle tours, theres a great restaurant inside that hotel. Bummer I don't know the name of that area or hotel or any of that, lol.
