Friends of Goodale Park Fountain Fundraiser

Goodale Park To Get New Fountain

Thanks to the Friends of Goodale Park, and family and friends of Paul Cianelli, a new fountain will soon take shape in Goodale Park Lake. Designed by Columbus-based artist Malcolm Cochran, the project will be built this fall. The six-year-long effort, in cooperation with the City of Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks, is about to be realized. Your contribution will help reach the goal of the final phase of fundraising.

Close to 200 park supporters attended a fabulous fundraiser last night at the Park Street Cantina. Owner Chris Corso graciously hosted the event in a great space with plenty of margaritas and delicious munchies. DJ Sean Rowe and MC Marshall McPeek kept the evening lively raffling off some great door prizes including:

Down Home Cajun Cookin at the corner of Gay Street and Pearl Alley donated an exquisite gift basket.

Purveyors of the edgeless brownie, located at 11 E. Gay Street donated super brownie offerings.

The trusted name in realtors, located in the heart of Victorian Village donated gift certificates to select Short North merchants.
Ã¢â‚¬Â¢Rafiel's Studio Salon
An Aveda concept salon at 2927 N. High Street donated 2 $40 gift cards for a haircut with Amy.
Ã¢â‚¬Â¢Spinelli's Deli
Opening its second location downtown at 50 N. High - next month, donated a catering gift card worth $50.00.
Ã¢â‚¬Â¢A Spirits Touch
The essence and tranquility of the Spirit, at 2988 N. High Street donated a $25.00 gift card for any of their Spa services.
Ã¢â‚¬Â¢Global Gallery
Columbus' premier fair-trade marketplace, with locations in the Short North and Clintonville donated a gift card.
Ã¢â‚¬Â¢Market Blooms
Located in the North Market donated a gift card for a holiday table arrangement.
The event closed with the drawing of three names of folks who will have the distinct privilege of "Pulling the Plug" on Oct. 3, which will begin the draining of Goodale Pond in preparation for fountain construction to begin by late Oct. or early Nov. Close to $2,000 was raised at the event with Chris Corso then matching the funds raised. It was a great evening.

I talked to a couple of construction workers at the park today. They began to drain the pond this morning and it will take about a week.

I was just wondering the same thing when I ran by the pond yesterday. It's been drained for ages, but there doesn't seem to be any work being done.

Construction should be starting any day now once the weather cooperates. We had an early and long winter which prevented the foundation from being built late last fall. The fountain will take approximately 60 working days to complete. Please note that this is 60 working days which does not include weekends and days where weather will prevent work.

So, if there are no inclement weather days between now and 60 weekdays, the fountain would only be completed after Comfest (June 24, 25, and 26), and after Pride (July 4th), and right around the first Goodale Park Music Series.

Somehow the prospect of stagnant water and lack of insect larvae eating fish is making the park seem really unappealing.

THAT. SUCKS.

"Early winter"? I remember playing golf well into late November, and I remember December being really mild. Am I crazy, or am I right that we had a particularly late winter last year?

Hey guys! Love all the interest:) The fountain is coming together nicely, although a little later than originally hoped. In fact, a lot of work has been completed. Over the fall/early winter the entire granite part of the fountain was carved, test assembled, and then shipped to Columbus where it is awaiting installation. The elephant sculpture has been modeled by Malcolm, and is being cast in bronze. Digging for installation began last Friday.

I know we'd all love to already have the fountain installed, but many factors impact construction projects, especially weather. The fountain will be in this summer. Watch the pond or check out our facebook page for progress...

Chris & Co - any updates available on the fountain? Love the idea - but wow is it painful to see that pond empty in the spring. Now that we're a month into a 60 day process - can you provide any insight?

From what I understand it will take 1 week to do each of the four levels. The hope was everything would be done by Pride and ComPost, now it looks more like mid July.

I think hippies in mud sounds yummy, and maybe Stonewall could do a fundraiser with Dykes on Bikes mudwrestling!

Not sure about the practicalities, but any chance they can start filling the water in as the lower levels get done?

Just having a thin layer of water would be a huge ascetic improvement.

I wouldn't be too optimistic about that timeline. I went down to the park on Tuesday afternoon at about 3 to sit by the pond and do a little work. There were two "workers" in the pond, who at the time were shoveling a big pile of dirt into what is going to be the base of the fountain. Never mind the fact that a bobcat could have gotten the job done in less than 10 minutes (it looked like it was going to take these guys a full day+ IF they were working diligently). I was pacing them at about one shovel full of dirt about every 45 seconds, and they were only walking about 5ft between loading and unloading. They couldn't have been going any slower without stopping work completely.

After maybe about 5 minutes, the two actually did just stop working, stood around for a while leaning on their shovels, and then moseyed over to their truck (which was parked in the pond) and stood around some more. They eventually went back to working at their previous, turtle-like pace.

A minute or two later an older guy who was obviously their supervisor showed up and approached them. I could hear him yelling at them, saying that he'd been watching them from afar and that he knew they'd been standing around doing nothing. The rest of conversation was muffled, but he was definitely chastising them for a couple minutes.
