As a follow-up to yesterday's Dispatch article about Gary Royer cleaning up a patch of state-owned land in Franklinton, I reviewed the site with him this morning as a candidate for a Friends of the Scioto River cleanup event.

The parcel is #010-003806 on the Auditor's map.

There is more there than just homeless encampment trash; there are old trash piles with trees growing out of them. There are dumped materials like vinyl siding. Gary has already filled hundreds of trash bags, but there's enough glass. etc., to make it worthwhile to shovel it into a loader scoop and drop it in a roll-off container.

FOSR will hire the loader and container. (Contributions are welcome!) We are putting out a call for volunteers, packing their stoutest shovels and rakes and gloves.

Cool - though a scoop shovel would be more useful than a spade. And 5-gallon buckets, as a friend suggested to me.

Some of this stuff is old demolition debris like bricks, and I'll bet they're from buildings razed for 315 construction. There's no telling what kind of old stuff there may be, like antique glass bottles.

This from Mr. Royer:

Alex,

The Mayor's Advocate for the homeless, Erika Jones, unexpectedly came to the site today at about 1 pm. She said ODOT is to pick up the bagged trash. Since they haven't while we were there, she assured me that she would get them on it today. I don't know yet if the 200+ bags were removed but will check before I go to work in the morning. Either way, there is still tons to be gathered up and removed.

Gary wrote today to say ODOT was there with a bobcat and dump truck. The city officials are putting priority on this.

This is the second time this has happened - I plan a cleanup, and the city beats me to it.

i would like to plan an illegal sign removal session, maybe we can do litter and signs? we do a litter pick up once a year in east franklinton but honestly it hasn't been bad enough to do one yet.

I'm not sure signs would be within a river group's scope, but litter in curbs/streets/sidewalks that would wash into the drains and river could be fair game.

I took a friend from out of town to the Franklinton Cemetery, she thought it was really cool. Gary does an amazing job keeping it up.

It's beyond the dead end of River St, off N Souder between McKinley and Broad.

I heat-stroked myself there this morning, but four of us left an 18-cubic-yard dumpster 1/3 full in 3 hours. Gary and I will put in some more time tomorrow, and he won't quit until it's done.

Brush cutter blade + tangle of thin wire in the weeds = downtime.

Yesterday the dumpster was 3/4 full before they took it away. We filled it with this kind of stuff ...

... along with countless beer bottles (at least 1,000) and pieces of bottles

ODOT came in and cut most of the brush, but it's still laying around in piles and we can't completely clear the place until it's gone.

It turns out that this is where OSU student Stephanie Hummer was killed in 1994. Gary would like to see this area become a memorial park to her.
