The Franklinton Homeowners Association, with the support of the United Way of Central Ohio, is working hard to improve the Town St. corridor by creating or refreshing flower beds at the ends of our medians on Dakota and West Park Avenues to help bring vibrancy and pride to our neighborhood. We also plan to landscape the yards of several elderly and disabled residents who would like to do so but cannot because of limited means and ability. We need volunteers to help with this!
There are two stages to this project:
Stage one is to improve the median parks on Dakota and Town by planting flowers and trees. (This weekend, June 4 & 5)
Stage two is to assist some elderly and disabled residents to beautify their front yards. (September)
If you would like to volunteer, please meet us on June 4 and 5 at 8AM (or whenever you can make it) to help us to improve our community!
Lunch will be provided by Tommy's Diner!

While many people drive to downtown on West Broad, Town Street is another gateway through our neighborhood and the first "face of Franklinton" that many see as they pass through. Like Broad Street, which takes people past some of our best businesses and restaurants, Town Street is part of the heart of the neighborhood. Neighbors, visitors, and those passing through see Mt. Carmel, our local schools, Gladden, some of the Franklinton Gardens. They also see our beautiful median-parks on West Park, Dakota and Martin, which are unique to Franklinton in their size and potential. These parks provide places for our kids to play and neighbors to walk and enjoy. According to Carol Stewart of the Franklinton Historical Society, these parks have served as the site for many events that mark the history of our neighborhood and Central Ohio. They are also part of a long history of neighborhood pride in which neighbors have volunteered to tend to them, plant flowers and weed. This last part has been difficult in recent years with the growth of "superweeds" (some had roots 3 feet deep!) in some beds that took over and made them unmanageable.
Our Neighborhood Partnership Grant focuses on redesigning six of the existing flower beds on West Park and Dakota Avenues, and building another four (total) including one on Guilford, and a little cleanup on Martin. You likely noticed changes already. On May 21 and 22, a group of 14 volunteers (and Uma the Dog) gathered at Egner Construction to execute our plan for the flower beds. We successfully prepared 4 of the beds on both avenues along Town Street and developed the sites of two new beds on Dakota, one at State and one at Rich.
We've received a lot of positive comments to date in person or by phone, but the work is not yet done. The beds still need to be planted with new perennials and flowers, and two of the new beds need to be built. These won't happen alone, and they won't happen with just the money from Neighborhood Partnership Grant. The grant will pay for the materials but the only way this will happen is if everyone comes out to help. The timing is perfect for this - flower beds will be done just in time to attract new attention to our 40+ new and rehabilitated homes and senior center, the new developments in East Franklinton, Go West!, Urban Scrawl, and the 2011 Franklinton Home Tour.
So, come on out and show your support on JUNE 4 and 5whenwe will meet at Egner Construction on W. Town Street, at 8AM, for the flower bed plantings. If you can't make it at 8AM, come when you can, we will be there until 3PM.
