I just learned about the whole cell phone service in the Franklin County Courthouse blunder.
WTF!
Nice job, greenies/architect! Let's throw another $200k down the drain!
I understand this new courthouse was constructed because of the high cost of asbestos abatement of the current courthouse and they were going to tear that building down. But now, all of the sudden they are going to perform the abatement?
Double WTF?
Did I get bad information, or are these some serious WTF's?

It's my understanding that money would have been spent whether they considered the issue from the start of the project or not. The major downside is actually the delay this oversight is going to cause.
If there is an added cost burden, the County could seek concessions from responsible parties. Sort of like what happened with the Short North arches.

This was the counties fault and nobody elses.

Actually, though, change order work or extra work done on T&M usually does cost more because it isn't as competitively bid, if at all. At any rate, gotta get it done....

LOL...If the builder was reponsible they would have tossed them under the bus.
Believing politicians and what comes out of their pieholes is fruitless if you haven't figured that out yet.
Perhaps you should read it again and try and comprehend the words where it says the county knew about it, placed it on the back burner.
Any of those words ring a bell ?

Serious question : If the around 10% energy cost savings from green windows recovers this cost in 5 yrs (rough numbers based on low averages), how is this a bad thing?
And, given my understanding of the unpredictability of how much cell coverage gets compromised with these installations, how is it a bad thing to take a risk to save 200k$ by not installing the repeaters unless you are positive you need them?

I opposed this building from the start. It is a waste of money. I am a government worker and the government loves to give us more and more space to work in. I work in the Rhodes Tower and many floors of my building are underpopulated.
The county would have been better off refurbishing the old courthouse building and making it more ergonomic and efficient. Of course, they could have done a poor planning job there and spent as much money as construction of a new building.
This project is a waste. I doubt that the benefits of the project will justify its cost. But the commissioners get to put their names on a shiny new building.

Do you have any factual knowledge about possible space constraints, or any other rational for the County to add this building? Your State office building situation isn't exactly relevant to this project.
Also, it's not uncommon or unusual for public or private sector entities to build additional space to accommodate expected future needs.

I worked in the county courthouse complex back in the early 90s and there were entire floors of some of the buildings that were empty. I have been over there recently and there are floors in 375 S High that appear to be vacant. From past experience, it was possible for county offices to be located in 375 even though it is the municipal court building.

And you are correct. My current experience with the state is not directly relevant. And I should add, neither is my experience from the early 90s. However, there are parts of 375 S High that currently seem like a ghost town.
Having future space to expand into is a valid concern. But the county is going to gain a huge amount of new space. And I fear the price that we will have to pay if they fill up all that space with government workers. All too often in government, you see lots of people working but not a lot of work actually getting done.
