Still evaluating both.

Also, try GowallaI've been seeing this around too, mostly from shmack. Right now I'm occasionally using Google latitude, and I'm pretty happy with it.
I used to use plazes.com, but they started having problems with their location detection and I dropped them. I think that plazes was pretty close to gowalla in terms of functionality.

I've been on for awhile, but haven't really used it since Cbus wasn't part of it. Maybe I'll check it out again now that it is local.

I saw this on CNN today; can someone explain?

Awesome!

Ok, I'm on, but I'm still kinda fuzzy on what it is. It looks like points are awarded for checking in different places. Kinda like a geolocation game.

Twitter answers the question - what are you doing?
FourSquare and GoWalla answer the question - where are you at?
The way they answer that question is by you checking in. Both mobile social networks use GPS to determine the location you are "checking into".
Once you check in - it sends out your location text message style (push notifications) to people you are friends with.
The more you check in - the more "status" you have within the network, which makes the service game like.
It's kinda fun.

Right now Latitude is winning because it's built into my Google Map app, and it seems to work pretty well.

Didn't one of the Foursquare founders sell his original company to Google a few years back? I know that there was some stink raised about some code reuse and possible conflict of interest.

Signed up. Not sure I get it yet, but I'll give it a try.

One other interesting thing about foursquare is that they have a (possible) revenue stream built in with local advertising dollars.

I'm guessing that foursquare will become more interesting as businesses figure it out and start using it.

michael - I've been testing all of them.
I think I like Gowalla the best so far. The UI is gorgeous, the metaphorical system (passport, stamps, digital items) is solid and fun. It gives you an incentive to check in.
I like FourSquare's simplicity, but there is some clunkiness that remains with the user experience. The leaderboards are really fun and are the main incentive to check in. I've been using Four Square when I can since last SXSW. When you're in a city where everyone's using it's fun.
The problem with Brightkite and Loopt is that nobody is really using them.

I'm in. Now everyone can see what a boring homebody I really am.

When you're in a city where everyone's using it's fun.Yeah, I think the simplicity will end up working in their favour, especially if they can work out their IU issues.
Beyond the UI issues, there are some User Experience issues that are more troubling. One is that 4sq is pretty chatty on my email, and there's no way to turn it off.. I basically don't want an email from a service unless something is broken, but the only checkboxes they have are to turn on getting an email for every checkin (um no fucking thanks), and for their newsletter.
The other UE problem I've noticed is that I checked into BONO Pizza last night and later noticed that it had the wrong address. No problem, right? Just hit the edit button, and.. Oops.. No edit button. Big fail there, guys.I'd imagine that it's going to be a big hit though. Especially when it's a tool that does one thing fairly well. The leaderboards seem kinda brilliant. It's a great way to keep people coming back and involved. I'd imagine that it targets people that like to go out and be seen, as well as people who like to spend $$ going out. The mayor thing is also a great idea, especially if they can turn it into a revenue stream.
I'll be playing with this over the next few days, but I think for my part I'll probably end up sticking to my even simpler and low maintenance Latitude for now.

I'm preferring Foursquare over Gowalla as long as they have an Android app and Gowalla doesn't. It seems really fun, and gives me a weird incentive to use it because of the game like aspect.

Foursquare updates that creep into Facebook and Twitter are annoying the fuck out of me. Please don't synch all your social media sites. Each is good for different things - not everything.
