If you want to find an unassuming place where bicycling is a way of life and nobody makes a big deal about it, head south. The south of Sweden, that is, where the small university town of Lund has a big bicycle habit. They just don't advertise it.

In Lund, 60% of the populace bikes or takes public transport to go about their daily tasks. And then there's Malmö, Sweden's third largest city - only 20 miles southwest of Lund. Malmö also doesn't have a reputation for fantastic biking. But some say it is the country's best biking city - ahead of both Stockholm, the capital; Gothenburg, the second largest Swedish metropolitan area, and a host of smaller bike-friendly burgs.

We already have/are developing bike paths between many cities here. I guess the difference is the onramps?

That is just stupid. One of the benefits to overall transportation systems of cycling is the ability to integrate it with other modes. Planning cycling-only routes like this are as short-sighted and inflexible as creating roads based on only on gasoline engine passenger cars.

As a cyclist, it would also suck. One of the pleasures of cycling - which makes up for the time inefficiency - is the sensory integration with the environment. I hate cycle-only paths where you are in a tunnel-like environment even if it is green.

"pleasures of cycling"? what a quaint american idea - the product of a place where bikes are still alternative transport and where you can ride the bike path in the morning and only see a few other people.

In Scandinavian cities, the bike traffic is just as bad, or worse, than auto traffic. The romance is gone. I'm sure people still prefer it to car commuting as a practical matter of speed and expense, but there's no "joy" to it.

I was really impressed with the idea until I realized that our bike paths are more or less bike highways.

By the way, maybe I'm missing something but biking with traffic is not on my highlight list for biking. I like experiencing the elements, other than cold, snow, and rain, but I would use segregated, multi-use paths, if available.
