Hudson-Based Flip Side to Open Burger Biz in Cleveland

Michael Schwartz, designer and partner in the Hudson-based Flip Side burger restaurant (49 Village Way, 330-655-3547), has disclosed that they will open a second location in Cleveland. Schwartz says he has reached an agreement with Randy Ruttenberg of Fairmount Properties to open a Flip Side in the Flats East Bank project, within the complex that will include an Aloft boutique hotel.

Schwartz also says that he and Monday are in the process of closing a deal that will bring a Flip Side to the Columbus suburbs.

That sounds pretty tasty.

When I was visiting Pittsburgh a few weeks ago we went to a place called Brgr. Their menu had a similar emphasis on interesting burgers. What stood out though was their excellent alcohol filled milkshakes. The Salty Carmel one (with bourbon) was particularly delicious.

I see that Flip Side has similar alcohol-shake options. This is a trend that I encourage whole heartedly. I hope that there will indeed be a Columbus location...

Although, it'd be nice if they'd consider a downtown location. The place in Pittsburgh was in an area that was definitely up and coming. It was part of a solid anchor of development that was obviously drawing people in.

Milkshakes have that power!

"Flip Side" is awfully close in name and concept to "Flip Burger" in Atlanta. Not sure which came first, but Anne & I are big fans of the joint down south:

Will try 'Flip Side' out. I was a bit disappointed by all the 5 Guys/Graffiti Burger hype after trying them out. I am not a culinary genius, but grilling a burger is not that hard. I hope that the hamburger isn't the new 'cupcake'.

I wasn't trying to derail the thread, seriously guys! I wasn't.

I hope that:
1. Flip Side opens a Columbus location
2. The food is as good as the promise held out by the menu.
3. They do well enough that they decide to open a downtown location in addition to the suburban one that they seem to be considering.

Is that too much to ask, I ask you?? :)

Little known fact, the aforementioned Randy Ruttenberg once looked at developing the former AC Humko site in Harrison West aka Harrison Park.

Flip Side is located in his First/Main development in Hudson, so it isn't a shocker they are sticking with him up in Cleveland.

Just went there with 2 other friends for lunch today. It was great and I'm looking forward to going back. I had the lamb curry burger and we shared the potato chips and onion rings appetizers. A friend had the flip side burger and loved it... looked really really good.

For some reason I expected it to be a fast-casual setup, and instead it's a more formal sit down, cloth napkin with a server type restaurant. Not necessarily a knock... but might be if you're trying to get in and out in less than a half hour. Cool decor, lots of wood, leather... distressed. Kind of an old wild west vibe.

Beer selection is fantastic but the prices seemed way high.

I'll be heading back to try a few other burgers from the menu though. Thumbs up!

I also found it a bit slow, but perhaps they thought my friend and I were there to hang out, which we were mostly.

I had the FlipSide. The bacon on it was great. I liked the sauteed red onions too.
I split an onion ring with my friend and I liked them, but some of them were a bit heavy on the chili powder.

They do have a wall with booths, so if you only have one child, that would be easier.

The place definitely smelled like new leather!

It makes sense to open up a location there since it's going to see a lot of traffic. I'm just not a fan of suburbia or malls. *shudder*

I am happy that they have some late hours. As a night owl, I can definitely appreciate that. Easton for the most part shuts down around 10pm so this is a smart move by them to be open later than most places.

Made it out here yesterday for lunch. Tried the Chili Pepper Burger (Pickled jalapeno / pepper jack cheese / crispy chili onion rings / smoked chili ketchup). Pretty solid burger, but not as spicy as I imagined it. Our group split some fries & chips, both of which were really good.

Will definitely eat here again. :D

When I went, it smelled more like cow. There was a prominent beefy funk that I actually found pretty unpleasant. The burger was fine, but the atmosphere was a big minus. Could've been a rarity. I'd try it again.
