Not sure I'd agree with the "failed attempt" thing, unless malls are supposed to be eternal. The Continent was the spot in Columbus for many, many years.
I visited Columbus with a friend in '88 to check out the city and see if I wanted to attend college here. We went to the Continent and I thought it was the coolest place in the world. Basically cemented it for me.
I'm very grateful to the Continent. Without it, I'd be in Pittsburgh right now.
I know it has seen much better days, but it was pretty innovative back in the day.
Dang, I thought there would be photos of the Continent during its hey-day! People can bad mouth this development all they want, but it was a happening place for at least two decades. The French Market was wall to wall people on weekends and it was definitely a destination spot for out of town visitors.
I think the heyday of The Continent was just before my day. I do remember going there once when I was maybe 13 with a friend and his mom to a computer store of some sort. I think he bought Mad Dog McCree.
Anyone know more about the current state of this development? It's something you never really hear much about. Do people still live in the apartments there despite the retail being mostly gone? Hrmm.... might have to do some digging.
All I can really remember is the etched in raspy voice of Suzie Wad on WNCI yellin 'Yucatan Liquor Stand' circa 1998. The Continent pretty much set up the 'lifestyle community' which the Arena District is a direct heir.
lol, its website still exists frozen in January 2001...
I remember that years ago, there was a little shop that had exotic meats like bear and moose, etc. but can't for the life of me remember the name. Anyone remember them?
did anyone else make "videos" at the little studio there? this was def a place for me and my friends to hang out in high school...I am pretty sure I have a sweet video of "Straight Up"...funny, I know where that video is, but I have no idea where those friends are. I loved the Continent!
I remember going to see The Wizard when it had just come out at the Continent movie theater.
My brother and I were all about the free samples of fudge from the Fudgery!

This was one (of many) plans to redevelop it over the last 5-6 years, but I think about as much came of it as the other plans.

I know a surprising amount of people living there and by surprising amount, I mean 3-4. There's a newer club there called Fusion in the old Funny Bone spot. The theater still runs and there's some clubs up there that seem to draw a crowd.
They had a candle store at the Continent that was packed with every kind of candle and other kitchsy home-decor thing you can imagine. I can't tell you the hundreds of times in our 4-year history where someone has walked in and said "I used to go to the candle store at the continent, and do you carry _________".
Makes you wonder about what Easton is going to look like in 10 years.
This picture is my favorite - because if you've been to the Continent since 1993, you know just how blatantly false that slogan is.
I have heard rumors of a one-woman Peruvian restaurant in the Continent area that serves things like chicken hearts on a skewer. Anyone know anything about this?
Ha! I lived and worked at The Continent for 3 or 4 years all-in-all. The apartments were awesome. 425 a month for a one bedroom but it included all the utilities (and noise). I worked as a projectionist at Lowes Cinema, at the Hollywood Deli (which had a spot downtown on High as well), and I was a manager at FinFair (the cool fish aquarium store) for a couple years. I loved this place and I would like to see it return in some form. However, thats doubtful to happen anytime soon. I may run down there and look around this weekend. :-)
How long before we're having this conversation about Easton?

Well, I think Easton has much bigger stores than the Continent ever had. For example, there were no Trader Joes, Apple, Nordstrom, etc. Those places have serious staying power. I don't see Easton going anywhere soon. I hate going there but....
