We need to stop recruiting dinosaurs for our offensive line, that's the only big change I see that is immediately needed. The second half play calling wasn't great, Pryor's play wasn't great, would have liked to see more pressure on their young QB, etc. but our offensive line continues to be the problem. No more brontosauruses (brontosauri?)and our talented QB and RBs can actually get something done.

Wow, firing Tressel?
Good God man, that is brutal. This is one fine man, who has done a tremendous job and represents the University exceptionally. The expectations on this man, at this level of Football are set way to high, because he has in reality/statistically done an incredible job. Personally, I don't think Pryor is living up to the recruiting furor he created, but that isn't Coache's fault. Lot of good insights on this topic, but firing Tressel, no way!Posted 2 years ago # -
Same old song and dance my friend.... Pin 'em down at the 10 yard line might work some of the time but we need a back up plan for godsakes. Quarterback sneak? Shoulda used it on more than one occasion. I think it was embarrassing to lose to a 19 year old rookie quarterback. You just KNEW that our defense was going to weaken at some point. Too bad it was when it mattered. We had several opportunities to put it away. OSU should have won 22-18. I'm super tired of Mark May and all the other haters talking about how overrated the Big Ten is and how much Ohio State sucks. Granted, we gave USC a huge scare and we showed up. The 'Shoe was rockin' and I was very happy with how we played. I'm glad I went to the game. Tress needs to step it up offensively. WAY too conservative.

After he got rid of Cooper's recruits (you know, the ones that he was able to take to the National Championship), that's what he did. For about a year. They got shoved around too much by bigger Big Ten foes.
He just did it too quickly... now that most of the Big Ten is changing it's offensive scheme to implement spread offenses and zone blocking (I believe Tiller was about the only Big Ten coach doing this for quite a few years), it is probably time to revisit that strategy.

If anything lose the sweater vests, but fire him? No way.

There's a piece in the Plain Dealer about Boren, the transfer from Michigan, on the line. Seems he represents the newer breed of O-Lineman and might be an influence for our guy.
For all the hype about spread offenses, most of the Big 10 games turn into to physical, smash mouth style ball games that can be pretty intense and awesome to watch. I would personally rather see a game thats typical of Big 10 conference play where you never know quite what to expect and both teams stay in it till the end. Much more exciting than "O, another 45 yard pass" or a lop sided blowout.
As far as the Big 10's image, I wonder if the conference has considered or will consider an actual title game. Considering the lay off from last game to bowl the Big 10 suffers from over other conferences it might help improve the chances a bit.

@ lotw: Agreed - I would rather watch that type of football. Unfortunately the weaknesses are getting exposed and the playing field is leveled when fast teams who run successful spread attacks in other conferences play the "big and slow" Big Ten teams. That's why I think we're seeing that shift in this conference, so they can compete on the same level. Smash mouth football in the Big Ten is fun and nailbiting and really preps the players for the NFL, but if the ultimate dream is a national championship, it's just not working anymore.
I think, but I'm not certain, the Big Ten needs one more team before the NCAA will allow them to have a conference championship game. When Mich. was good, having the OSU/Mich game as the final Big Ten game was a pretty good substitute as a title game. There has always been a push to get ND, but the Irish won't give up their independence (I wouldn't either, they have a sweet deal). So, who would be the 12th team? There aren't really any good options beyond ND that is a good fit for the Big Ten. Then you'd be getting into some lower tiered schools that might be on par with Northwestern. Pitt? WVU? Kentucky? Marshall?

Cincinnati is actually playing up to the Big Ten level in recent years, IMO.

It's not unheard of to have shitty teams to fill your conference. Baylor anyone? Ugh, painful.

From wikipedia:
Other possible universities that have gained favor for any possible expansion for the 12th spot in the conference include:
* Rutgers University[12][13]
* Syracuse University[12][13]
* University of Missouri[13]
* University of Nebraska[13]
* University of Pittsburgh[14]
* West Virginia University [15]
* Iowa State University [16]These schools all belong to rival BCS conferences. The six BCS conferences are, overall, roughly on an equal footing with each other. It is uncertain whether any of the schools listed would be interested in membership in the Big Ten conference.
Due to a requirement of the Big Ten bylaws, any expansion must be within, or next to, current Big Ten territory (although, like all bylaws, this could be amended by conference vote). Due to the addition of the Big Ten Network, expansion talks have been revisited. Expansion could mean adding a conference championship football game and adding a school in or near a large TV market, greatly aiding the Big Ten Network's marketability[12]. It is likely academics will also play an important role in any potential 12th school being invited into the conference.

Forcing a team used to very quick possessions and scores to play a drawn out, physical game it is not accustomed to can be an advantage to a team like OSU provided they are able to take the opportunities they have and make the plays.

Cincinnati is actually playing up to the Big Ten level in recent years, IMO.Indeed, if they want to jump off the Big East ship and come to the Big 10, I think they'd do alright.
I thought about them, too. Dantonio really turned that program around during his hiatus from Big Ten action. Joining the Big Ten extends into other sports as well, and obviously the Bearcats can play some bball. I guess if Northwestern can coexist with the Bears, Cincy can coexist with the Bengals.
If it was 2005 or 2006, I would have said "add Rutgers," but they really aren't that good aside from those two years. And what about their success in other sports? The only thing appealing about adding them would be the history. You've got the pageantry of OSU and Michigan and then adding Rutgers - the birthplace of college football. That's an awful lot of history right there...
Out of the list under consideration, and taking into account the fact that the 12th team would need to be at least a little bit of a draw, make some dough for the Big Ten, and be competitive in not only football, but basketball, I would have to pick Syracuse or Pitt.
Although Nebraska and WV know how to fill some seats, too...

beating Michigan isn't enough
Uhhmmmmmm yes it is and what about the fact that we are still always in the hunt for the big 10?

Fire Jim Tressel? He's the best coach OSU has had since Woody. He consistently wins the Big 10 and beats Michigan. That's what he was hired to do, because that's what keeps the alumni donations rolling in.
I think the "embarrassment" over "poor performance" gets at a larger issue, which is that fans of elite teams want their teams to compete against each other on a national scale, not a regional one. College football just isn't set up for nation-wide competition, hence the perennial dissatisfaction with the BCS. If there was some sort of super-conference that included USC, OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida, Miami, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Alabama, then Tressel would be held to a higher standard and maybe you could make the case for firing him. Of course, at that point college football creeps even closer to being a minor league for the NFL, and then you might have to start paying the players what they're actually worth. </scarythoughtexperiment>

I've never supported a conference championship game because it provides the opportunity to have a team with a middling record play in the championship game against a 12-0 team. The move to having more, smaller divisions has been a bad thing in every major sport IMO by letting average teams win bad divisions.
Though it will never happen, I would actually prefer we go the other way, kick out a team, and have every Big 10 team play every Big 10 team, every season and drop the number of OOC games to 3.

the scrutiny is earned and will continue. he can't win big non conference games. he admits it. and i have to blame him for that loss on saturday. maybe i ignored it in the past, but the decision making and play calling, especially on offense, were total blunders. giving them 3 pts at the end of the first, not scoring on the 2 yard line (uh qb sneak pryor is bigger than usc's dt's), not getting field goals on multiple occasions, the list goes on....
oh and then there's the fact that POOP HERRON RAN 18 TIMES FOR 44 YARDS. Brandon Saine got one series, only one carry. the only time we moved the ball is when they went 2 backs and hit Saine out of the backfield a couple times. crap he was open for a td if Pryor hadn't missed it.long story short, i'm now in 'hold tressel accountable' mode, which i've never been in. that loss is inexcusable.
