Losing bowl games to Florida, LSU, Texas, and then losing USC two years in a row and Penn State last year AT HOME....When was the last time we won a big game? Theres no question that Jim Tressel has brought a lot to Ohio State football but beating Michigan isn't enough. It's time to take Ohio State to the level it deserves and Jim Tressel hasn't been able to do that. FIRE JIM TRESSEL!!!

There was an interesting story on NPR yesterday about wether or not it was appropriate to call for coaches to be fired in todays job market.

As much as I like Tressel, a small part of me agrees. We really need someone like Pete Carrol. I just don't think the Tressel method of coaching works in this era anymore.

And the chicken little fans come out...
"The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"
I'll agree we need to win big games but your really going to ignore the overwhelming success this program has had under Tressle over 5-6 games? I mean the defense held one of the best offenses in the country to under 100 yards well into the fourth.
Let's not forget this is the man who brought home the crystal his second season and OSU's first national title in how many year-40? It's a young team. Let's give them the credit and see how they play through the rest of the season and into bowl week. If OSU goes 1-11 this year, maybe calls for some shakeup in the staffing is called for. But 1-1 and a 3 point loss to a heavily favored team is nothing to worry about.
Considering that the seniors and captains had to give a little pep talk to the young guys on playing amidst the local negativity, it might be better of us to stand behind the team and show our support and give them the confidence. As much as a coach affects the outcome, I'm sure the level of support and confidence a fan base gives has some bearing as well.

The game last night was frustrating, but Tressel's success is undeniable. Perennial Big 10 Champs, BCS bowl games nearly every season, and the last 2 big games we lost were both lost on last possession, game-winning drives by Texas and USC. Since Tressel began as head coach, Ohio State has probably been the 2nd or 3rd most successful program behind USC and probably Florida following their last title.
Barring an insane turn of events, Tressel is on Paterno status with me: He's our coach until he doesn't want to be.

I agree with lifeontwowheels. This team just showed it can play with any team in the country and they are pretty young overall. Anyone who is so quick to throw the team and coach under the bus is way too spoiled by the recent success. As much hate as the buckeyes get nationally, there aren't many division one programs who wouldn't trade everything for the success OSU has had the last ~10 years.

Another thought that strikes me:
For years OSU (and the Big 10) have been criticized for weak schedules in non-conference play. Now OSU is stepping up with early season games against teams Texas, USC and Miami (FL). What's better: taking a loss early on from a strong team, scrubbing your wounds and learning from it or blowing out some pathetic MAC team 45-6? Plenty to learn from and build on over the season from yesterday's game film.
I think if you are going to change anything, let's start with some of the assistants. Find some folks who can challenge Tress and shake things up a bit.

Stadium record crowd yesterday of 106,033. What's not to love about that?

Anyone have a number for the decline in OSU players arrested under JT?

Tressel doesn't coach "exciting" football and it's frustrating to excited fans who want to win, but it doesn't mean he's not doing his job. It's especially frustrating to someone who grew up watching Big 12 and SEC football. Makes me absolutely crazy.
It is pissing me off that people are complaining about the decision to kick the field goal when they were 4th and goal and it was tied 7-7. Of course you kick the field goal, people. It was so early in the game, you get your points on the board and you trust your D-line to hold the opponent. Pryor's inability to complete passes, his sack, and his interception (that got those 7 pts on the board) were the culprit last night, not the play calling.

My problem with the game was OSU's inability to score a touchdown when they were in the red zone. That has been a consistent problem. I don't think firing Tressel is the right solution.
However, it is a sign that something is wrong and needs to change.

I am a Tressel fan, but I would really like an offensive coordinator.

However, it is a sign that something is wrong and needs to change. If anything needs to change it's OSU's ability to pick an offensive strategy and stick with it. So many of the dominate teams/coaches are known for a particular style of offense where OSU/Tress is known for largely conservative play calling and old school run it up the gut.
It seems year to year they largely start from scratch and develop a new strategy/scheme around the latest top recruits. I think having a more consistent approach year to year would allow the players to develop over time as they take on larger roles on the field and in the locker room.

That is what made the Michigan game so excellent, they are playing West Virginia style ball at Michigan now, and it is exciting.

One of the stranger first posts by the way.

No offense to OSU football... but, wouldn't it be nice if we had other things in the city to be passionate about so when the Bucks lose,.. which there's a 50/50 chance they will.. it won't sting as much..

yeah, we need someone like pete carroll so we can lose 1-2 games a year that we SHOULDN'T lose instead of 1-2 games a year that we probably should.
remember when OSU lost to michigan state in 1998 and blew the national championship hopes? yeah, pete carroll has done that almost every year.
the numbers speak for themselves:
at the end of last year tressel was .813 with 1 national championship, 5 big ten championships, and is 7-1 against michigan
in woody hayes' first eight seasons, he was .730 with 2 shared national championships, 3 big 10 championships, and 5-3 against michigan.
if you think someone who has been more successful than woody hayes needs to be fired...
