I was wondering how people feel about Final Scratch, especially other djs. I don't mean do you like the program as much as how do you feel about straying away from vinyl and/or would you think less of a DJ who used it? It seems to make a lot of sense but then the purist in me kicks in. Just wanted to hear some other opinions.

I've never messed with it, but it sounds pretty cool to me from what I've read. I think controlling digitial files with an analog table is better than just playing with cd mixers. ;) It really shouldn't matter as a DJ though... if you rock a party, you rock a party, no matter what tools you're doing it with. I'm sure you might catch some flak from some DJs, but oh well....

If you are considering the thought of the 'purist' then it should be good. if not then there is a misunderstanding of what exactly this product does. IT IS REAL VINYL - only time coded for digital files. the downside, or outcry should come from record labels who also snarl at the thought of digital turntables. final scratch is great and will always have a place in my rig. to those purist haters out there, give it a spin, thousands of turntablists and dj's cant be wrong. i love final scratch.

My problem is not with the equipment, but I do take issuse with what is being done with it...
Vinyl Scratch is great if your trying to spin music that you yourself created but for some reason can't get it pressed...Hell, if I had the money I would get one just so I can spin tracks my boy produces and mix it with the wax I have...to me thats what it would be used for and should be used for...but if your mission it to DOWNLOAD shit off the internet...then I feel your just being lazy :?..

We have no record shops that carry House Music :(...where to get records? hummm....ohhh..the internet :)
But, I also belive that it comes at a price...I have learned that I don't like to go on the net and look for records, there is no feeling in it...I love going into a record store, I love being in that bitch all damn day, going through every wall, every bin, going up to a table with a big ass stack of wax...and going through it..I LIKE TO DIG FOR MY RECORDS...but I can't cause we have no record store here...so I have to go elsewhere for records..but at least I still buy wax..
I have seen DJ's use Vinyl Scratch and some of them were not playing songs they produced..they're just pullin shit out of thin air *internet* and spinnin it. Now, am I going to hate on you if you do that, naw..to each his/her own.
In closing I have this to say...used for good Vinyl Scratch is a wonderful tool and I would use it if I were making my own tracks or really wanted to play a track that someone I know made and they asked me to spin it. Other than that, there is no use for it in my life.

I don't think it could have been said much better.
Final Scratch should be used for home-mixes that aren't pressed to vinyl, or, for music you legitimately own in other media formats (ie: CD) and want to spin with vinyl. I have plenty of great songs on CD that are either out of print on vinyl, or were never pressed to begin with, making them impossible to find. So if you have legitimately purchased music in one format, it's fine to make your own copies for your own purposes.
Yeah, Columbus really could use a good record store again. Maybe oneday RezRec.com will become a brick-and-mortor store, but I'm not sure if that's a part of their business plan. ;)

i don't know if anyone was around or aware of it, but the same types of things were said when cd-mixers hit the market in the early '90s.
like walker said, if you're using it to digitize your own personal collection (and get rid of stacks and stacks of vinyl) then i don't have a problem with it.
technology always has two sides to it and this is a perfect example. on the good side it allows a dj to play a track he might not have been able to play with just tables or play tracks that he doesn't neccesarily carry with him at all times on vinyl. on the other hand i've seen dj's who use it exclusively and play essentially the same set over and over, completely eliminating any artistic value.
personally at this point in my career a system like this would allow me to pull tracks from records that i wouldn't necessarily carry all of the time. allowing me to have a "classics" library without having additional crates to lug around.
the first time a saw final scratch in action was at the winter music conference in 2002. josh wink used it for his set and he used it to play older tracks that fit perfectly into his set. used for that purpose i have no issue with it.
i guess everyone can have an opinion but what it boils down to is personal choice. i honestly think that if you program your set the right way it shouldn't matter if your using vinyl, cd's, or final scratch.

I'm in love with it. Best thing I've purchased since my first pair of 1200's. It's great not having to lug around two ATA cases to every gig, and being able to throw down anything in your collection at whim. If you're a travelling dj, it would be even more crucial.
As long as proper ethics are upheld, I swear by it.

This about sums it up EXACTLY on Final scratch and the whoel analouge Vs. digital debate, honestly could not have put it much better !

there are a few... just none that are very good, or very big. Culture 7 was the place to go when it was open, but after it shut down I pretty much only buy my stuff online. :(

Rane makes a new product similar to Final Skratch that is supposed to be nicer...I think it's called Serato Scratch.
For those interested in cd turntables, have you seen Technics new one coming out this spring?
I'd never get that or any cd turntable, but it's pretty sexy still.
