Anyway back to peppers, my sauce didn't win. It got 52 points and the winner got 58. But it was fun to watch the competition and taste the other entries.
Dang it was crowded upstairs and downstairs this year!

Yeah, could barely move around. Sounds like you were close to winning. You gonna bring that sauce to a CU event sometime?
Cafe Corner has a sign up that says they won the chili contest. Good for them. This is the first NM contest I have missed judging in the last two years.....so bummed.

I was at Barley's talking to Scott and he said he needed to shop over there but he didn't like going on a Saturday because it was "amateur day" and when he said "with strollers" I burst out laughing with a "Yes!"
As for bringing sauce to a CU event, maybe that should go into a CU chilehead event thread of its own.
A series of pictures from the pepper-eating contest:
The rules were, everyone gets a plate of large jalapenos (I think it was 10) with a 4-minute limit, and whoever finishes first wins. If no one finishes within the time limit, the one with the fewest remaining peppers wins. The peppers had to be eaten to the stems, if any flesh or seed mass remained the pepper did not count.
Starting out, perky and comfortable and ready to go

A crowd packed the room to watch, there were dozens of cameras

Starting to show some wear as the time passes

Arrrg, stems

Time's up, and two contestants were down to three peppers

The contest goes to sudden death, CaJohn (at left) selects one nice ripe pod for each. First to finish wins.

The winner
More images, there was a hot sauce contest and here the entries are being checked in. The judges did not sample from the various containers, each sauce was given an ID number and was given to the judges in small cups.

Each judge rated each sauce on a scale of 1 - 5 for criteria like aroma, consistency, flavor, etc. The ratings are tabulated and the sauce with the most points wins. The winner (IIRC a smoky serrano-garlic) received 58 points.
The sauce judges had a pretty good glow by the end of the event.

Fiery Foods Festival Review
February 23rd, 2010 by Mary
OK, so it would be presumptuous to really “review†an event that we put on, so this is more of a summary than a ranking.
Thanks to all who came out to the 7th annual Fiery Foods Festival at the North Market last weekend.
Kudos if you participated in our salsa, hot sauce, chili, hot pepper eating or wing eating contests. Extra kudos if you supported any of our fabulous merchants and fiery foods vendors by making a purchase.
