Glad to hear, I've had a good time at his shows and the price to see DJ in Cbus is unbelieveable (cheap) compared to europe & the coasts.

Ferry is fantastic, not to mention one of the coolest people I've ever met. I had the pleasure of hanging out with him when we brought him to Redzone for one of our "Ritual" events. I still have the set from that night in my iTunes library. The mix and photos from that night are still online at: ritualexperience.com

This is why the electronic scene is so fractured. Whether you like Ferry's music or not, you should be glad that he's stopping in Columbus on his tour. This show could be the first electronic music experience for some new freshmen at OSU. And then it could be their gateway into exploring other electronic genres. And then who knows... maybe they'll even come to Bristol too. That is unless their fondness for Ferry doesn't keep them excluded from getting in the door. :?

I love the fact that all of this talent is coming to town...I wish, however, that Donnie would find a different venue for them. While I respect the owners of Sugar and their business savvy the list of ways that the venue could be improved...or should have been improved is lengthy. It's far from an ideal venue for these types of events.
Not trying to be a total hater...the place just isn't for me.
All that aside, perhaps I should rethink how I voice my opinions...I had no idea that I was so influential. I kinda feel super-cool now knowing that I can single-handedly fracture the electronic music scene. Now, everyone kiss my feet, immediately!
Really tho...how does one person voicing their personal opinion on an internet forum have any bearing on whether or not a freshman @ OSU will go see and act at Sugar? Are freshmen @ OSU so easily swayed in their decisions regarding entertainment that they'll simply blow off electronic music as a whole based on some vomiting emoticons?
People are free to like whoever and whatever they want...and comment accordingly.

I don't know if voicing your opinion will keep random individuals away from this event, but I DO KNOW what will keep me away....
1. The complete lack of soul in any music played by Ferry Corsten.
2. Sugar is a bad venue for this type of event.
I usually try to stay away from conversations like this, but whatever; I'm feeling frisky today.

Sure, one person voicing their opinion doesn't have much bearing. But you're not the only one doing this. You're just one of many. And that type of mass negativity has a much bigger impact.
So yeah, I'm picking on you a little bit here an as individual since you were the first one to chime in with the kneejerk reaction, but I'm sure others will follow and this will turn into an "I hate Ferry/Sugar" thread.
And when people stumble into this thread because they're googling for "Ferry Corsten Columbus"... oh hey... wouldja look at that? The very first result that comes up is people saying Ferry and Sugar suck. Guess nobody should be going to that show.

All the freshman coming to Ferry are just hoping to get that feeling of their first roll experience while listening to tiesto back. :lol:dKilla wrote

I feel pretty confident that I do more for the local scene through DJing an eclectic selection of quality music that virtually no one in this area is familiar with, my event production and my promotion of other EDM DJ's, both local and international than I do harm by making a comment about Sugar Bar or Ferry Corsten.
While their are plenty of people putting a negative spin on various aspects of the EDM scene in our city, the vast majority do so having never made the slightest attempt at breathing any positive air into it. Perhaps you are correct, I should lead by example...but on the other hand, I feel like I've earned the right to form and share an opinion.

Of course. I'm glad you do all the hard work that you do, and I think are you are already leading by example. And everyone has the right to share their honest opinions here.
I'm sorry that my comments were picking on you directly when this is an issue that goes above and beyond the both of us. I guess I've just heard those types of complaints one too many times, and I feel like your statement of the obvious (Ferry/Sugar sucks) isn't a comment that really adds any value to this specific conversation at all.
If people want to get excited for this event, how about we let them? To each his/her own, right? :D

You're right...doesn't add any value at all. I'm sure many will be excited. Many more than can fit comfortably into the confines of the venue...yet they will all be admitted. :D
I would never have made a comment like that in an official event thread but I certainly understand your point.

I hate to continue this subject on a thread that should be strictly used for the ‘promotion’ of an event, but in the words of my friend Boyd, I'm feeling frisky today.
I see both sides…Walker makes a very valid point. People on these sites – more so on “Rave†sites like bluelight, etc. – have a tendency to trash events due to personal bias to the venue and it’s management/owners or hatred of a particular genre. I do feel that these personal attacks and simple, unconstructive critiques do NOTHING to help the scene or the continued growth of EDM in Columbus. I know for a fact that MANY people who have little-to-no knowledge of EDM in any shape or form come to this site to explore and use CU.com as a resource to approach genres of music, clubs and events they have never been exposed to before. A constant stream of negative comments about a venue, a promoter, a particular genre of music, etc. serve no purpose in the expansion of EDM. Anyone who has been evolved in this scene for any length of time knows the results of constant backstabbing and trash-talking in this scene. We are just now beginning to move back into a positive environment as far as talent return to Columbus again. If you have a hatred or lack of respect for a genre, a venue, a promoter, an owner, etc. these threads are not the place to voice them. These threads should be strictly for promotion of events. Let the reader view the information and make an untainted decision. I feel the personal attacks and criticisms should be made elsewhere.
On the other hand, this site strives on the knowledge, experience, reviews and unfiltered expressions of it participants. It is very difficult to get things done and accomplished without the insight and experience of the Walkers, Dkillas, Aus-10’s, Scott Litch’s, and the countless unnamed others that have worked for years to make the scene the way it is now. In order to grow and succeed it is imperative that everyone be able to express, and feel comfortable expressing, their individuality. This scene WILL NOT succeed on a House music ONLY, Trance music ONLY and D-n-B music ONLY, etc mentality. The scene will only succeed with a healthy seasoning of all genres and a variety of venues to experience them; whether it be the small intimate vibe of Bristol, the massive cathedral-like space of Boma, or all the mid-size Sugars and Mynts in between. Free expression is great and vital to the growth of the scene, but only if it’s purposeful and constructive. “I hate Tranceâ€Â, “House music sucksâ€Â, and other blanketed statements that only reflect your own personal opinion on a subject serve nothing more than to create funny reading [sometimes]. And yes, the comments are sometime VERY funny. I happen to be in a very fortunate position because while I am a BIG fan of trance, and also love house, breaks, DnB, techno and most all forms of EMD (I will take my own advise and not comment on Happy Hardcore). It is easy for me to go out and support all types of musical event, regardless of gerne, because I truly like them all. Some people just can’t say that and they should not feel the need to, but please keep these feelings off of promotional threads. It doesn’t help things at all. I feel that on these types of threads the old concept of if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all should take effect. Or at the very least, if you have nothing good to say, say it with thought, intelligence and with purpose of change, not malice.
With all that said… Walker: Have you ever considered a “Venting†page of sorts. A page strictly designed for critiques, personal opinions, and the likes; maybe giving everyone a specific area to voice their opinions? I think that would be GREAT and may help curve these types of debates.

Neil, your (lengthly) words of wisdom have changed my heart.
I now advise all those looking for something new to go to the Ferry Corsten show and see what you think for yourself about the venue and the artist. I will save my personal opinion for those who personally ask me for it.
I was in "a mood" that day and unfortunately took it out on the likes of a man name "Ferry"...I apologize.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Very well put Neil. That's sort of what I was trying to get at, but you hit the nail much harder on the head than I did. ;)
As for the venting page... meh. People can vent elsewhere. If people want to offer creative criticism on CU, that's always welcome. If people want to just rant about how much Venue X sucks or DJ Somebody is a sell out... well... there's plenty of other websites out there. ;)
