Anyone have experience getting a fence installed? I'm looking for recommendations for a handyman/company to install a wood picket fence, so this guy can burn off some energy without resorting to vaulting our couch:

I live in Clintonville and had Kelly Fence install a fence. They were very professional and didn't trample my plants. They were done in a couple of days. I don't have their phone number on me but it's nailed to my fence. We walked our neighborhood and noted the fences we liked and called various fence companies (they all nail plaques on their newly built fences). Estimates from several companies is always a great idea.

cutie patootie. my neighbor just had one installed, i'll check with her. she did mention it was expensive. but she always says that about contractors.

Thanks, y'all! I live in Clintonville and have been stalking the neighbors' fences--glad to know that's normal. Pablo, I'll check into Kelly Fence for sure (you're right, getting several estimates would be wise). And yes, groundrules, if you don't mind asking your neighbor, that would be awesome. Our yard is small--we'll need 50 ft of fencing at the longest side--but I know it's not a cheap project no matter what. Still, it'll be so so so nice to have a safe place for the lil' guy to play.

If you are looking for a simple picket fence, 4' high, do it yourself. Very easy to do: post holes every 8', no concrete just dirt and gravel (concrete retains water and rots wood, even treated wood, don't let anyone tell you otherwise), pre-fab fence sections. All pretty inexpensive.

I would be more than willing to help too. The cheapskate in me typically digs the holes by hand, but if you have a lot and want to make quick work of it, then renting a post hole digger is the way to go.
Don't forget that you'll need to get a permit to do the work too.
Also, you'll want to get a survey done if you don't already have one. You can probably get away without if you can locate your property pins. Depending on where you are in Clintonville though, you may not have any. If you want to PM me your address and your email address I can look up and send you the plat for your subdivision. That may have some clues on it. If ultimately you do need to get a survey done expect to pay $300 to $600.

*G* we never got a permit for the stockade fence we (I) put up at Linda's townhouse. The old original fence had blown down, and the original back yard was about the size of a small suburban driveway. The fence ended at the corner of the building.
She had me install new fence, and she did a blatant land grab, widening the yard by 16 feet (2 panels) enclosing a sideyard which we would have had to mow anyway. The landlord approved, and zoning inspectors have seen it without saying anything. Now she has a large secure and enclosed yard that's safe for kids and dogs.
If you need manual post hole diggers, I have a set.

Hey, thanks all for your ideas, insight and offers of help! My husband and have talked about doing the DIY thing, but his schedule (~60 hours a week of work and band practice; out of town about every other weekend) made it seem near-impossible. But you guys have me reconsidering, as we have a fairly uncomplicated project (No slope, neighbor we adjoin already has fence up and says it's fine if we bring ours all the way up to his and city code sez we don't need a permit for a fence six-foot or lower.). Hmmm ...

Some of that was very easily done before, Alexs. I won't say where I put an addition on a house without a permit and it ended up being just fine. The City did not (seem to) care and they've seen it. That was then and this is now. Things have changed unfortunately.
Now days, though, the City is very hungry for money and even has been going back on closed projects and billing for inspections that they previously overlooked and did not do. I've heard they have people just drive around looking for work. When I built my garage I witnessed serveral random people stop by and examine my permit for no apparent reason.
As a professional engineer, it would be a big slap in the face for me to get caught working without one...especially when its clearly obvious that work is going on. I don't agree with the policies, charges, half-ass inspections, etc. but I have to follow the rules. At the end of the day, they have the authority to stop work or make you remove the work and that's just a risk that I wouldn't be willing to take.
People will do what they will though... my two cents.

The zoning inspectors have been after Linda's neighbors who share her driveway. At one point they had three inoperative vehicles with expired tags in the driveway, it was a damn junkyard. They're down to just one now, this might be a nice day to call 311... Other neighbors had old tires stacked up, now gone.

I keep 311 on speed dial! I feel bad reporting my neighbors (and my tenants neighbors), but when their gutter has been hanging down for 6mos, the trashcan has been sitting out at the curb for a year, they have cars on blocks, a yard full of waist high weeds, major sidewalk trip hazards, rotting porches, etc. I can usually justify it.
I just don't get why people get so upset. They clearly have some sort of violation going on, just fix it and get on with life.

Probably no need to remind you, but just so I feel better, please go here -Ohio Utility Protection Service- before you dig anything anywhere. We are in the landscaping business and one thing I've learned is to never assume what may or may not be underground.
You can request that they mark the utilities by phone or on their website. The service is free.
After they mark it, the flagged or painted colors mean:
Red = Electric
Yellow = Gas
Orange = Communication (Phone/cable)
Blue = Water
They figure an 18" tolerance to each side of the markings.
Good luck to you, it's not a hard job at all. Measure everything twice and if you use wood keep the fence boards off the ground a couple inches - they can wick ground moisture and eventually rot if they touch the ground.

Careful planning is key. Divide the length into 8' to 10' sections so everything is even. The last thing you want is something like 7 nice even 8' scalloped sections and then one 3' section on the end.
