Feb. 1st is this Friday. And that kicks off the first of the 2008 Monthly Challenges, also known as the "Groupsourced New Years Resolutions." (Here is the original thread here, it was Walker's idea.)
Let's make Feb the month of the Indie Art Capital Challenge...
Some ideas to get you thinking
- Inform 2 new people per day that Columbus is the Indie Art Capital of the World.
-We each go to at least one play or local live music or art event, put on by local artists, or art orgs. & if we already do that, then we inform, or drag along friends who have never been.

You rock and I was going to suggest that as well. I have made all of my printed flyers for the C Note Show as Presented by the Columbus Indie Art Capital of the World. It is in the long run exactly what the show is all about. Local artists reaching the Local collectors. While at the some time offering artist and collectors alike the chance to show and buy their first piece of artwork.

can't exactly announce some good news for spark yet until everything is confirmed but i can say that you'll want to mark feb 23 on your calendar and plan to attend. this one will be the biggest, best yet.
spark is a hang it yourself art free for all showcasing artwork by the indie art capital of the world. this is my contribution to the cause and it is pretty much as grassroots as it gets.

Also a group met at Northstar this sunday to set in motion Columbus Public Art Day. This is one of the first projects that stemed form the 11.11.11 IAC meeting. There will be flyers distributed at Gallery Hop this weekend with information. Melissa Vogley-Woods who will have a solo show at the OAL gallery has been working very hard on this project in the Spirt of the Indie Art Capital Movement.

For me, this is going to include not only attending as many independent art events as possible, but also helping to promote them, bring friends along to, spread awareness about, and even help make some of them happen. I'm going to be going all out on this throughout February, so expect a lot of art-related blog postings from me as well as CU features. In fact, you will see an Indie Art related blog post from me every day throughout the month of February. That's how hardcore I am about this.

Agreed we consider all forms of expression Indie art around here. So music event would easily apply to this effort. It would be nice to see more flyers for these kinds of events represent the IAC with a logo. Feel free to PM me if you need a file for one or create your own!

I'm happy to see people posting other events/ideas here. I knew I was forgetting some - Spark! But that's the point, it's not one person listing everything... it's all collaborative.
So keep listing them here... and spreading the word.
Walker, looking forward to the blog posts. One a day is alot!! (Alot of writing to do, not like there's not enough events going on...)

How come all of this Indie Art Capital stuff looks so slick, overproduced, and corporate? Aren't you guys aware of the irony of it? I was expecting to see something with more of a DIY aesthetic coming forth from all of this.

How is it ironic to be professional?
Who says DIY has to be grungy, collaged, sloppy, and photocopied? I'm very much into DIY movement, but happen to design things that are super minimal and clean. I didn't have anything to do with designing this flyer or any of the IAC materials, but I think it's a bit ridiculous to say that one graphic style is more "DIY" than another. There are graphic artists behind all of the IAC stuff, and they "did it themselves." It's not like someone went to CorporateID.com and just had some machine spit out a "sweet logo."

It didn't look like it was made from a template.
Maybe this city is just full of DIY artists that know how to make nice promotional materials....

I know that other people are with me on this. They may not post on this site, but they are out there.
When the cards that you are using to promote something that is supposed to be organic and independent, and they're indistinguishable from a club party flier or an advertisement for a car, you've got a problem.
I don't have a problem with professionalism, but when someone looks at your promotional material and automatically assume it's hyping up an event at "Club Fever" then you're not branding yourselves very well.
I think the card looks nice, and professional, but it doesn't say "Indie Art" to me.

Sorry Nikos... but I think that is sad.
I like to think that we can make ourselves look professional.
And I suppose I would assume the same thing about the flier if I couldn't read. But it does say in bold print...COLUMBUS PUBLIC ART DAY
Seems to be pretty clear to me.

I'm not saying that the above card is the best design or the best representation of those characteristics. I'm just arguing that everything doesn't have to be all typewriter-ed and handwritten and pasted together to convey an independent, creative attitude.
Besides, there aren't enough hot ladies on that card for it to be a Club Fever flyer.
