for me, ableton does the trickk just fine..........its perfect, for quick ideas, and track laydowns..as well as has a super sick drumm machine/midi controller in it.....its called "impulse", with about 20 different drum kits, each with its own host of rediculous "per note, per instrument" knobs to tweak on........(i use alot of redux, with a good chunk of gate, to fatten up everything i make as far as kicks go.).but then again,,,i like the old 8 bit (or even less, i run 4 or 2 alot)..old school sounding sloppy chunky kicks.
lay down a kick in 4/4, for a measure......and tweak it all up......and then for extra added dirtiness,,,,,,,add an effect to your drum midi,........like "redux" which is a nasty bit reducer, or "errosion", to make the kicks sound as dirty as you wanna be........add a "ping pong" delay at about a 1/4 wet, and it will do the rolling techno/trance tribal goodies as well..........
aside from top end protools software,,,,,in my opinion, there isnt anything else that compares, and ive used most of them.....traktor/reason/cubase/logic/acid/fruityloops.......id also highly recommend a MAC, computer for music production.......they are the best computers for multi-media, music production.......changing from pc to mac, in my studio took me to another level. they even have professional 24bit/196 sound cards in them straight from apple, so no need to upgrade your card if youre on a budget..............it just works......working and recording in 24 bit, while you produce,,,,,and then rendering to a 16/44.1 wav, will give you a much richer wav file when youre done.
if you want portabilty, and easy on processor power.......ableton live....
youre welcome to come to my studio anytime and try it out......
