Instead of derailing a thread, I thought I would start another.
The older I get, the more nostalgic I get for my childhood. Some of my favorite memories are:

eating a sitdown family dinner every night
Mom baking cookies every weekend
playing tennis in the streets/ or off the garage door
going grocery shopping every thursday with my dad and getting to push the cart
swimming in our pool every day
riding bikes up and down the street until the lights came on
catching fireflies
building snow forts(okay I still do this, but it seems like we used to get more snow)
going to "The Honey Bear" for ice cream after a softball game
exploring the woods near our house and building forts in them(now this is a residential development)
having two responsibilities: Clean my room and empty the dishwasher after its run

Setting a blue velour blanket out under a tree in the backyard and reading a whole book in one sitting on a long summer day.
Catching (and releasing) crayfish and salamanders in the way-back creek.
Legos!
Blanket forts and playing the "hot lava" game in the living room.
Wandering over to my great aunt's house next door around dessert time.
Sitting in the back seat while somebody else drove!

looking out the attic windows in the late afternoon and around sunset....
the house was at 206 w 1st ave. funny, i thought of that the other day. i was 3. :D

climbing trees! really, really high trees.
walking in the woods dressed as an Indian (back then it wasn't a faux pas to say that), with my moccasins, trying not to make any noise
taking a nap in the middle of a breezy summer day listening to the planes overhead (we lived in the country, and there were always test pilots overhead)
the way your family always let you be yourself even if every person at school made fun of you
lying in the grass, staring at the sky and making up stories in my head
hot air ballooning
when it was really hot out, the tar on the road would bubble up, and you could pop the bubbles with a stick
riding my bike for miles on perfectly flat roads
find the nest of the barn cat's kittens every year
swinging on my tree swing
thinking of creative places to hide things from my parents!
. . .
and, when I was a little older, um, having a dinner of *delicious* mushrooms and laying on the roof in the perfectly black country night, looking at the stars with the boy who would later become Husband, and realizing how our ancestores got the idea for contellations.

playing in the ball pit at McDonalds
stuffing a plastic bat with newspaper and playing wiffle ball with a tennis ball
going down into the sewer repeatedly to retrieve said tennis ball

Riding in the back of Dad's PU with my brother and sister.
Driving the Farmall tractor with the sickle bar mower in the orchard.
Playing on the railroad tracks.
Hmmmm, a lot of my favorite childhood memories would get parents arrested for child abuse these days! :shock:

My grandfathers farm
Riding bikes with my brother and trying to do tricks (wheelies, home made ramps, dirt mounds in the mesa)
kick ball in the cul de sac everynight during summer
tether ball
going to the pool all day every day
my best friends mom sold mary kay and would put this mask on our faces after going to the pool all day

Going to the Southend drive-in with my parents and bro.
My dad had a 79 GMC crew-cab pick-up... and we used to put blankets down on the hood and watch the movies!
Riding my bike up from Parsons/Frebis all the way over to High street to buy baseball cards at the Collectors Corner. When I was a kid... that seemed like I was riding all the way across town!
I remember summer nights in my parents southend house....we didnt have any air-conditioning, so me and my bro used to take our bunk-bed mattresses.. put them on the floor in my parents bedroom (the only room with a window air-conditioner), and the whole family.. including our dog would sleep there during the hot summer months.
My dad ordering Planks Pizza when my mom went out of town... and going to the Mohawk on thursdays for meatloaf night. Oh... wait a sec... I guess some things never change!

Skateboarding shirtless down the huge hill by my house and realizing that I had loosened the trucks to ride my halfpipe, and going so fast that the skateboard started wobbling like crazy and threw me off, causing me to try and run it out but I only got 2 steps in before I did a flip and slid on my back for about 20 or so feet.
My entire back was a gory mess & when I got home my dad took a picture of it! He was so proud. This might seem like a messed-up memory but I just don't get up that easily from misadventures anymore. Like Horse Chestnut said, some of my best memories would probably get my parents arrested for abuse/neglect these days. Jumping bikes off a ramp into the lake, BB gun fights, blowing up my toys with gasoline & firecrackers, etcÃ¢â‚¬Â¦

Getting home from school and riding my 83 Honda XL100 in the woods and fields surrounding my home until dinnertime.
Those woods and fields are now cookie cuter homes by the hundreds.

My best memory involves my crazy ass brother when he was 8 and I was 12. We had a baby sitter and for some reason she made him upset, so he chased her around with a kitchen knife, she starts crying, and calls her boyfriend. He drives over and gets out, we run into our garage find bats, shovels, whatever, and we both chased him back into his car and he left.

- playing ball with friends until dark
- being able to run the neighborhood without worry of being kidnapped
- trespassing into the abandoned "haunted" house out in the field
- bike races (and crashes) on a big hill
- climbing pine trees and making forts in them
- swimming in a local natural spring
- skateboarding in the basements of neighbors houses as they were being constructed
the best we had for a video game was missile command, which got boring fast. I have to wonder what growing up would be like now. None of us were obese growing up - like kids today.

Haha speaking of babysitters. One locked me in the basement once so she could watch MTV and chatter on the phone. There was a disconnect down there for both the phone and electric, plus dad had installed a lock on the inside of the door to keep me out when he was working. So I threw the switch on her MTV and phone, locked myself in, crawled out a basement window, and went to a friends house til I saw my parents pull in the driveway.
Never saw that sitter again.

Safe to say she did not. We also had another babysitter that killed herself, but that is another story.
I have so many memories that most of you probably think are insane, but my family is insane, and we joke about most of these stories every year when we get together for christmas or whatever holiday.
I used to play football with these kids that were 4 years older than me and lived up the block when I was in like 4th grade. One time I went over there, and they knocked me off my bike, threw the ball at me, punched me, and took my bike. I ran home, and grabbed a wine cork screw, and put it between my middle and ring finger and ran back up there. They started laughing, saying' "he has a can opener hahahahahaha". So i walked up to one of them and swung, and i caught one of them in the hand, and stabbed his hand with it. He was all like "what the hell, you are crazy". They ended up giving me my bike back though.

In my neighborhood in the early 80s, most people's driveways were tar/blacktop. This required frequent maintenance, etc. So the smell of hot tar was frequent, especially in the summer.
Now, the smell of that anywhere cues up a whole list of specific, vivid memories from my childhood. Amazing how tight that connection is.
