+1 on Cypress Grove. Delicious, unorthodox stuff in general from them -- an interesting lavender goat (Purple Haze), a goat cheddar, etc.
Should have mentioned having gotten completely hooked on the grilled halloumi (or Blue Jacket Dairy grilling cheese) drizzled with balsamic vinegar combo. Did a little cheese plate for a cocktail party out at my mom's over Thanksgiving, and her friends' reactions to that one went from "What's that??" to "Where can I get some?" very quickly.
Yes roy! I had Humboldt Fog in a delicious salad at Latitude 41 last summer and fell in love with it. Damn it, now I need to go get some.
As another plus, the people at Blue Jacket are great. I got some of their goat cheese last summer as well as the grilling cheese and both were excellent.
Love, love, love the Humboldt Fog.. I cannot give these guys enough props..
also for US cheese try the Zingerman's Creamery (Ann Arbor, MI) Lincoln Log and Detroit Street Brick cheeses. The Lincoln Log is a milder goat cheese and the Detroit Street Brick is a firey goat cheese studded with green peppercorns. Lake Erie Creamery is worth a mention for their fresh chèvre.
For cow's milk cheeses I like the Spanish Mahon cheese. It's one of the few cow's milk cheeses made in Spain, from the island of Menorca. Amazing stuff... still a bit of cream, but plenty of tartness. Kinda like cheddar but a bit more balanced. Yum..
I've been eating plenty of creamy blue cheeses lately.. plenty of good French and Irish blues out there.. I can't remember what I've been getting. I've just been asking Mike at Curds and Whey.. I also recommend asking Mike for wine and serving suggestions. He knows tons about both wine and cheese and has never steered me wrong.
