Restaurant expansion on hold for now

Plans to expand Max & Erma’s in German Village have been put on hold because of opposition from neighbors. According to a variance request filed with the city of Columbus, the restaurant at 739 S. Third St. wants to expand into an adjacent two-story house and build handicap-accessible bathrooms, additional seating, office space and a conference room.

Well, it seems this is why we have zoning. Hopefully they can work it out, but the neighbors are just using their rights.

This cracks me up:

Jamie Weilbacher, who lives on Frankfort Street, said..."the restaurant has outstanding issues: Employees make noise late at night in an outside area in the back of the restaurant, which also is the receiving point for noisy early-morning deliveries."

Well buddy, the restaurant was established in 1958, so odds are that it was there loooong before you moved there.

I love when people complain about uses that existed WHEN THEY MOVED IN! how in the hell can you complain about it when you knew it was there when you decided to live there?

Jamie, of course, runs a business out of his home nearby, and a little research shows that he moved there in 1983.

I can see both sides.

In college I moved next to a popular restaurant and was surprised at how little they seemed to take into account their neighbors. It is surprising how much noise can be made. For some reason they would be smashing bottles at 3am in the dumpster and talking with the manager had no impact. When they expanded they put a high velocity AC (loud as hell) and exhaust vent (everything I owned smelled like it had been deep fried) about 2 feet from my bedroom window. Thank God I was just renting and I moved out of an area I otherwise enjoyed living in.

I realize businesses have to do certain things but I also really value mixed use areas where commercial and residential mix. To make that work there needs to be some compromise and I guess that is why there are all these zoning laws. It is easy to say such and such was here first, but a lot of times an aspect of a business can change or even the actions of a few employees can really effect the quality of life in the neighborhood. I think a lot of people view the 'burbs as a refuge for some of these reasons.

Yeah this will never happen. I do not think that the people who live around it will ever OK any expansion of anything.

German Village is less olds-controlled than it has been in the past. And that house has been sold 2 or 3 times in the past 6 years. Max and Erma's isn't open too terribly late, and MoJo Lounge is a good example of a food business that expanded right down the street. There will be some crabbing, for sure.

As someone who did live next to a bar (not a bar/restaurant but bar) I tried to be sympathetic to staff doing their job as much as possible because there will always be something. At our old place it was people taking out the trash at 3 a.m., or guys picking up recycles/trash at 5 a.m., at our new place its the landscaping people mowing lawns on Saturday at 7 a.m. I gave a friend that lives off of 3rd in Harrison West whose been woken repeatedly by emergency vehicles since the hub is right down the street.
That's just part and parcel of urban living.
