At issue were remarks Holbrook made during a videotaped job interview for the president's job at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.
She told officials there that she confronted "a culture of rioting" when she arrived at Ohio State in 2002, and witnessed people doing "disgusting things, unbelievable things" on a videotape she ordered made after the Ohio State-Michigan game that year.
"They think it's fun to flip cars, to really have absolute drunken orgies. ... I don't want to be at a place that has this kind of culture as a norm," she said in the exchange, first reported in The News-Press of Fort Myers.
"When you win a game, you riot. When you lose a game, you riot. When spring comes, you riot. African-American Heritage Festival weekend, you riot," Holbrook said in the interview.

And that's the problem right there.
I'm not going to say that there weren't (or still aren't) problems with things getting out of hand at football games and other campus events -- but when you've got someone coming in with THAT negative of a perception of the whole thing, someone who clearly is completely turned off by the entire scene, you're never in a good situation.
So... rules get stricter, crackdowns ensue, people get bitter & more resistant, situations escalate, etc.

I agree with her completely. I didn't think that was all that controversial of a statement.
Isn't OSU known for football and riots?

You seriously don't see ANY hyperbole in her descriptions?
While success in football has definitely been a big thing for OSU's recognition, especially in the past 50 years or so, there's also the whole thing about being one of the largest universities in the world, the #1 ranked public university in Ohio, ranked in the top 60 colleges & universities nationwide, numerous nationally recognized programs, etc, etc...
The rioting is even a relatively recent thing - that didn't happen 15 years ago. The situation didn't really get bad until they tore down South Campus (and all the bars that were there). I'm not saying there's a direct connection, but the timing is about the same. Maybe at the same time or around then they also started upping police presence in the nearby neighborhoods, and that's what caused the increase. I will say that I've seen most of the real big riots were escalated by police presence. Not police doing things themselves, but drunken idiots harassing police, police responding appropriately (or SOMETIMES with a little more force), and things getting out of hand from there, resulting in tear gas, rubber bullets, and so on. And, even more importantly, actual students made up less than a QUARTER of people involved in most of those riots (based on numbers arrested - sometimes even fewer then that).

Idunno. I read it as condemning the cultural acceptance of rioting students following a football game. I mean, even on these boards, we all joke about riots and couch fires. We even have a local arts organization called "The Couchfire Collective".
It's more a statement of the obvious than something to get all riled up over.

I think she got a bit of a raw deal here. Being a woman in what has traditionally been a mans position, people were giving her a hard time from day 1 and she was essentially run out of town.

Why all the hate for this woman? She was just speaking the truth; there are people out there who did disgusting things during football season and during any other variety of festivals/events. Personally, I liked Holbrook.

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I would not hire an individual using these sorts of statements for any job, negativity towards any aspect of a previous employment situation leads me to infer negativity towards any prospective employment.
I'm just glad that Gordon is back at OSU, we've had a real string of losers since he was last with us, im my personal opinion.

Exactly. The statements were quotes directly from her mouth - not requring any spin by bitter OSU tailgaters.
How do you go into a job interview and not tone down your contempt for your former "employer"? I mean, she's applying to be the voice for this institution. You would have hoped that she'd have taken the high road, i.e. "I encountered many cultural obstructions to implementing the vision I had for that fine institution."
Everbody can decipher that code, and she wouldn't have come across as so vengeful.

i agree too. after the riots, my family called me from Hawaii, concerned. they heard all about it. it was national news, so yes, that is how ohio state was perceived.
