big ups to tony on this one...
the point here is that envelope plays at indie rock clubs, not hood clubs... the same goes for 90% of the columbus hip hop community from the past, RJD2 plays wexner blueprint plays skullys envelope plays bourbon street. everyone used to hang out at bernies... it has all thrived and grown out of a hip hop community based around college bars and the like. when it comes to rap that tends to matter. rap battles have always touched on the idea of being/not being from the hood... i think that is an important part of tonys story. he came out of a scene that was based in osu campus and was not at club ice. it did not matter if you slept on park benches and peoples couches, if you showed up at bernies it was about who could rap better... not about if you had money or if you had street cred, blah blah blah.... i saw tony and blueprint in akron three or four years ago at an insanely hood club that had illegal strippers, and a djay that played "kryptonite" and "gettin some head" on repeat. it did not go well. at all. the crowd was more interested in listening to krunk hits of the time than seeing some one perform original music....
an indie music scene cultivates new music, new ideas, new talent. a hood club has a similar function as brothers or any college bar, to play music people know so they can get drunk and hopefully get laid. it probably would not have been possible for tony to be who he is today if it was not for the community that he was part of and he grew out of. if the dispatch writer is too out of touch to understand that point it is a shame. im sick of watching the local rags regularly write half baked stories about amazingly talented musicians. if a person spends a year and a half writing and recording an album, don't you think you should attempt telling the story of... why its good, how its good, why its bad, what made it happen, what stopped it, where it is popular, where it is not, when it started. tell the fucking story understand the subject, if your writing about a white rapper from the midwest, do some research about other white rappers form the midwest, explain the context. early detroit techno is good because it was made by young inner city black kids trying to emulate white guys in germany and george clinton... stop phoneing it in.
what logic is there to say that the writer of the blog is from dublin when the argument is about street cred not mattering? fuck. if i hear another english major complaining on the internet about spelling errors im gonna claw my eyes out...
