Anyone ever heard of supervolcanoes? Well, we have one. It's called Yellowstone. It erupts, on cue, every 600,000 years or so, and the last one was 630,000 years ago. So it is overdue. And it might be waking up.
Not sure why the geophysicist in the article states the last eruption there was 70,000 years ago. Either he is confusing it with a blast near Sumatra at that time (which nearly drove humans to extinction), or he is referring to a smaller eruption. Anyway, such an event would cover half the United States in ash 1 meter deep, and probably kill almost everything within 500 miles. And that's before volcanic winter sets in. So crops fail, economies collapse, panic ensues, etc.
If you have a lot of accrued vacation time, you may want to think about taking it sooner rather than later. And here I thought the Large Hadron Collider would do us in. :roll:
