I just realized I'm neglecting a fantastic networking opportunity with my decision that after moving to Columbus I should probably start working in Columbus by not asking all of Columbusunderground.com for help!
So if you know of any full-time opportunities for someone holding a B.A. in Social and Behavioral Sciences (dual major Sociology and Criminology) from The Ohio State University, send them my way! I have spent the last 2 years with a crazy job in social services with numerous responsibilities including public speaking, government benefit eligibility determination, case management, administrative policy development, tech support, workforce development, course instruction, employer and partner agency relationship development through outreach and much much more. I'm preferential to workforce development/career counseling but with my ample and beneficial skills and abilities I can excel in just about any environment! I love public policy, the computer is my friend, and I'm not afraid to roll up my sleeves and/or pound the pavement. I'm ready to make an investment into the community I live in and not commute 35 miles out of town for work every day. If the job is close enough I'll even bike to work, you can send me a lead and I'll return the favor by helping the environment! I'm close enough to bike to Downtown, Grandview Heights, Campus, and Upper Arlington in most weather conditions - even further when it's nice out.
Anyone with anything to contribute will easily become my new best friend. I'm already doing resumes, applications, and interviews for a few opportunities I've found - but a few more couldn't hurt one bit. Thanks again!

The real question is what do you want to do? What industries are you looking at? Healthcare? Education? Government? Business? Technology?
What are you passionate about most? If you had to do the same thing every day - what would you choose to do?
Do you want to sit behind a computer? Do you want to travel?
I also have a dual SBS degree (Psych & Crim). I feel your pain (Although I've never done time in social service. Education, though. Which is still very tough.)

While I can probably turn you onto a few really rewarding jobs, I'm not sure you'd be able to afford internet access to stay on C/U afterwards ;)
Alvis House could use you for sure, but it's an incredibly unimpressive workload vs. paycheck and stress vs. reward type situation, for example.

1) I want to work on public policy every day, but I don't think anyone should be allowed to write public policy without a serious and diverse background in public service... so I'm working on gaining that background. I also plan on obtaining a master's in public policy in the near future. I'm not certain that I want to teach, but I know that I want to be involved with the research, development, and implementation of sound policy regardless of political orientation. Often political gameplay results in unsound policy... right now though I want to work in an arena where these policies are implemented and distributed to the public, and that's where my current job is - I just want one in the community I live in.
2) Checked out the Alvis House, I'm not sure that I'm the sort to work with MR/DD population right now in my life... I have the empathy but lack a solid toolkit for developing and counseling that group... I also am not sure that I'm interested in being involved with addiction/emotional trauma counseling or anything of that sort as I feel sometimes nonprofits might not have the funds to pay truly qualified individuals to help clients that I know I am not qualified to handle.

Compliments to you on this insight. As someone involved in PP every day, as you say 'writing' and as I say 'implementing,' you sound like a wonderful addition to the field. I wish I had a spot for you, truly I do. I will remember you, don't worry. PM your bio and salary requirements.

You really want public service? You could try the library. i'm serious. In some branches library staff are practically social workers, anyway-- and you can work with a great cross-section of society in the library world.

Columbus Aids Task Force might also be something you could look into. They provide amazing resources for people who have or are affected by loved ones with HIV. Sometimes they have only a few people working hundreds of cases.
It is a great chance to give back, be completely underpaid, and work with people who are completely normal, functioning members of society. The case workers help with everything from getting people affordable meds to helping provide them with low-cost pet care.
I think they also do a lot of policy work & fundraising, so it might be a good way to get some policy writing experience.
