Ohio moves toward fast lane in electric, hybrid car development

When Paul Havasi drives the daily three and half mile route to work from his home near Cleveland he gets a lot of second looks from other drivers. Some of the looks are appreciative thumbs up, others are jeering laughter, but very few ignore his mode of transportation - a three-wheeled electric car.

A computer network engineer by profession, Havasi says his background in electrical engineering made him very interested in an all-electric car. He was also happy to purchase a car made in Ohio. His NmG is made by Myers Motors of Cleveland.

ODOT seeks New Federal Funds for Transportation Projects of the Future

Electric cars, a new runway for landing futuristic aerospace equipment, and access to new jobs along the Ohio River - those are three of the 12 projects the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is hoping will receive funding through a new stream of federal transportation dollars.

While no one state can receive more than 25 percent of program funds, ODOT is supporting several applications totaling more than $259 million in requests. Those applications include:

Electrifying Ohio's Transportation System - a $11.3 million request to develop an Ohio electrical vehicle infrastructure readiness plan with local governments, including deploying 136 plug-in electric vehicles and 864 charging stations.

I love that they are based in Ohio!! A very interesting concept and small transportation I would potentially consider.

However, there is a big catch, WINTER. After doing some afternoon research on electric cars, I found out that you loose upwards of 30% of the battery capacity in the cold. So you 100 mile range could be down to 70, or your 60 mile range to 42. Something to consider in a all-season state like Ohio.

Wow. Not enough engineers on this board. We've got all the time in the world to pretty it up. You've gotta prove the science first.

Pretty sure the same reaction was evoked the last time someone posted a next gen energy
concept car. It was all, "ooh, I wouldn't be caught dead in that thing."

At least he had the sense not to throw on a couple Perrysburg-made PV panels. It would so not have matched with his work wardrobe ;)

I want to fight back and say I am not, I would say I am like 60/40 form over function though, sure. I think of it like the argument of whether or not art needs to be appealing. If it doesn't look good, no one is going to buy it and no matter how significant your message or movement is it needs people to listen or take part.

This is a problem, but it's one being addressed. BMW ran into this with MINI Electric prototype program. The next version, BMW Active E, has a system that maintains the environment that will contain the batteries. This will extend their useful lifetime and protect against climate related effects.

One problem at a time :)

Roland: Very Nice. BMW is very crafty. Actually my 2001 5-series (my 1997 did too) has a feature call "REST." Whereby if the temperature is below 60 you hit the "AC MAX" (REST on early cars) button after shutting the car off and it turns the car's HVAC and uses the residual heat of the engine to maintain the cabin temperature for up to 30 minutes. One of those little touches that I appreciate. I am sure you could incorporate a system like that on hybrids to help keep the batteries warm on cold days.

What if everyone bought electric cars?

In any case, the transformation of the world oil market from a sellerÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s market to a buyerÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s paradise is going to reduce AmericaÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s security problems connected with the oil supply whether we get in the electric car game first or not.

Yea, and Walker. Back then we weren't most ready in Commercial development because of Ohio being in the 'Rust Belt' But things can change :)
