Ok so it passed now what ? How do the people of the West Side get involved in making sure this compound gets build to look good and not like a stock building. It seems like if they made this an investment and worked on making this a architecturally beautiful building that it would be a win for the people in the area and Penn. Why not?

I'm with you, misskitty. Now that we know the casino is coming here, I'm still interested in revitalizing the west side, just want to help ensure it is done smartly. Please let me know what you find out as far as public meetings, etc. of any of the groups involved with the JEDD/casino, and I'll make sure to do the same.

Yes. Since Penn had stated they would build it in accordance to the existing architecture and style of the AD, I think its safe to assume they won't be doing that at Delphi. Also, the pure size difference is pretty significant.

Penn has said they would put in a "resort" hotel at the Delphi property....
This article has made me feel better about the whole thing - I'm glad that Plaza is really looking at the opportunity presented, and thinking of a whole complex of retail development.
Also - for all those concerned with the "looks" of the property - just check out some of the other Penn holdings. The property in Lawerenceburg is getting a huge make-over, and the exterior of the complex was immaculate. Here's a link to the hotel there.

I'm worried about the sustainability of what's planned. If they're planning on turning Westland into Weston Town Center (as noted in the article), and building everything around the casino, what's going to happen in 20 years when both the mall and the casino are beyond their useful lives (if you look at Atlantic City, they knock down and rebuild/rebrand casinos every 20-30 years)? The article also speaks of inside agreements between the mall owner and Penn National, so how do we keep them honest with regards to not dictating zoning in a way that is positive for them but not in the best long term interests of the neighborhood? In other words, how does your average citizen get involved so that they have a voice with regards to what happens next?

Regardless of where the casino would have been located, if they intended to hire gaming positions locally, it would have been listed. And the press release that didn't mention a hotel was released yesterday.

To me, from what I understand of the other casinos that have attached hotels, if there ISN'T a hotel on site, it helps the area and the city. If there were a large hotel, folks would simply check in, then gamble and eat all on site. No hotel on site then forces people out into the general area - where they'll hopefully see other places they'd like to eat and places they'd like to shop.

I think now that the decision has been made, those that really want to open dialogue with Penn have to find someone, a spokesperson, who is professional and can communicate with Penn without emotion.
For instance, why wouldn't you just send an email asking how the gaming positions will be hired? Maybe there's multiple phases. Maybe they have a third party do their hiring for the positions that have to be vetted.
Approaching everything with a Chicken Little mentality will get you no where. Not you specifically, swampkitty, but in general.

Or it could mean that people bus into the casino (casino bus trips were a bit thing back in Jersey), spend the day gambling and eating there, and then bus back out without leaving the casino property at all. What did it look like at the one that this one was based on? Did it have an attached hotel?
