Thought this was a pretty significant update for the ongoing casino discussion, and probably a good jumping off point for a new tangent:

Central Ohio lawmakers hope to persuade the would-be developer of a Columbus casino to move to a site out of the Arena District, state Sen. David Goodman said yesterday.

But if the casino developer isn't willing to budge, state legislators and local officials have a couple of hammers to use against Penn National Gaming Inc., said Goodman, a New Albany Republican.

I've never said that moving the casino isn't possible... just that it's got to be done through the legislative process (another vote & another amendment) rather than the developer just picking a new spot on a map.

And up until these recent developments, it didn't sound like there was much of a solid plan at making that happen at the government level.

It sounds like some folks in Canal Winchester want to have the south-side trifecta of Beulah Park, Scioto Downs, and A Casino, but it doesn't sound like that will happen.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. From the article:

Columbus could simply deny the casino site the public utilities necessary to operate a large business.

If Canal Winchester or some other community in the area is truly willing to accept the casino on as-yet-to-be-fully-determined-yet-reasonable terms, then I'd think Penn National would be very asinine not to go where they are truly wanted, rather than wrapping themselves up in our hacked state constitution and attempting to force themselves upon a community that has vehemently expressed its objection to their presence.

Also, if the proposed site for the casino is moved from the Arena District to someplace else, must it even remain within Franklin County? What if say Dayton or Youngstown were willing to accept it?

Personally, I still think this spot in Wilmington along I-71 between Columbus and Cincy screams "build a casino here!" I can't remember if this location was featured in one of the earlier proposals or not, but perhaps it is still a viable alternative?

We've just turned in from spending more than 14 hours with Casino Free Philly. Chuck and I both haven't picked our jaws up off the ground yet, but we will and we can't wait to head back and share what we've discovered next week.

This is interesting to see take place. So how are people planning to determine where this casino will go? I think that is where itÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s going to get real interesting. Finding a happy place for this thing is going to be hard I think.

Personally, I'd rather just see it canceled from Central Ohio all together. The voters of the region didn't want it, and I think that includes Canal Winchester, the Arena District, or anywhere else.

Do you actually have voting break downs for the individual areas inside Central Ohio? Like by zip code or township?

There was an article I read this morning in the Other Paper (I think) that showed some of the voting break downs. It mentioned Franklinton voting in favor of the casino 60-40. A pocket of Vic Village (apartments behind the Giant Eagle on Neil) also approved the issue (only 90 some votes total for that area). I'll try to find a URL

I guess they could put it out away from living areas. I will be level headed about the placement as long as they donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t try and dump it in Franklinton/Hilltop area.;)

It would work on the old Clippers Stadium site, and be far far better than a racetrack, IMHO.

franklin county election results - you can find downloadable results for many prior years as well. Download the complete results xls file and you'll find the data you're looking for.

This is the kind of data that Nate Silver over at fivethirtyeight uses to crunch and create all his graphs/charts. I don't believe you can just get zip code data, but you could take these number at the precinct level and cross reference it to the zip codes that make up the precincts. That legwork however, is on you to do. :)

It would be better than a race track I will agree. But I feel like in a area that is already avoided by the city and all the homes around the area that the space could be used for something far better than a casino. Also with all this talk about design of the building in other threads it makes me wonder. If something like this were to be placed in Franklinton what would keep them from just making one of their craptastic versions on the cheap without real effort or thought into the design.

Right, because people in Franklinton don't give a rats ass about how things over there look, do they? I think I just read that Franklinton is tired of getting what the city doesn't want. I'm sure they would jump all over this one, though.

Well, as was stated though GH...right now they're getting a race track, and between the two I can't imagine anyone wouldn't rather have a casino.

ETA: they're required to spend 250 million dollars on the building according to the amendment.

DidnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t the sound study shoot down the race track idea?
I know some people are saying that the casino should not be in the arena district due to the Family friendly nature they are trying to build. What about all the Families that already live on the west side how is that any different?
