I'll be in New York next week, and am wondering if anyone can recommend any good, not too expensive, vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Manhattan?

In the times I have been in New York with my best friend, who is a pretty strict vegetarian (will check on use of chicken stock, animal fats, things like that) we've really never had a problem finding vegetarian fare for her. Almost every restaurant had listings for vegetarians.
I've been sitting here wracking my brain trying to remember good places to recommend, but I keep thinking... everywhere we've eaten has been really good. None of them that I can recall were strictly vegetarian though.

I contrast New York to our road trip through the south, where we literally planned our schedule to coincide with the Wednesday vegetarian buffet at the 7th Day Adventist church in Memphis because it was so hard to find veg-friendly restaurants.

asian themed veg/vegan: vegetarian paradise 2 near west 4th, and zen palate which has too many locations to count
well made western veg/vegan: angelica kitchen in noho, and kate's joint in the east village
if you are uptown (on 125th): harlem juice bar has great caribbean vegan dishes, awesome value too.
if you want a fucking AWESOME banh mi (get the meatball and your friend can get the veggie): saigon banh mi straddles the little italy/chinatown boundary
fucking awesome falafel: hoomoos asli in soho
k, i think that's pretty exhaustive in scope of cuisines and neighborhoods for now...

I've seen this place mentioned in a few other places, and I might have to try it. I'm the veggie.
I've been to New York before, but this is the first time I'll be there without a local to show me around. I've had some of the best food in my life in New York, and I'd be disappointed if I ended up just getting pretty good food.
I've been to Memphis before too. You have no idea how much my BBQ-loving traveling companion still resents me for dragging him to what has to have been the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever encountered.

haha... I totally get it. It's too bad you missed the 7th Day Adventists... that was actually a really really good buffet. The difficulty of finding a good vegetarian meal in Memphis didn't really hit me until we actually *got* to Memphis, and I realized that rice and beans isn't vegetarian there. That... nothing... is vegetarian there.

The falafel at Maoz is the slamma jamma. Vinnie's Pizza in Williamsburg has freakin' great vegan slices.

PongSri in Chinatown is where I often end up with my friend Todd (who is vegan). I'd say it's pretty good overall. It's not a vegetarian resturant per se, but they do have lots of vegetarian and vegan options. They also have locations in Chelsea and the Theatre District.
I've also gone to Madras Cafe quite a few times. It's a pretty decent South Indian vegetarian place on e. 2nt Ave. south of 4th st.
If you're looking for even more options, let me know and I'll send the list my friend sent me. He even has some fine dining and good date options if you're so inclined.

My "vegetable stir fry" was literally a hot salad. There were tomato wedges and iceberg lettuce involved.

Could you be more specific please?

Here are three recently-tested successes:
Taim Falafel (West Village). Tiny counter-service place w/ the best falafel I've ever had (tho Pita Hut by Graceland is a close second in this race). Three kinds: spicy (harissa), red pepper and plain. The plain is as green as i've ever seen. A "platter" -- comes w/ two of each kind, plus maybe two side dishes -- was about $10.
Also, $4 gets a gigantic basket of hand-cut fries. It's great and cheap.
Candle Cafe (75th & Lexington) and Candle 79 (79th & Lexington)
These are both vegan (same owner, obvs). Candle Cafe is a little more downscale (think BBQ Seitan sandwich) whereas Candle 79 is truly beautiful and a little more like Dragonfly. 79 has an excellent Sunday brunch (with cocktails!) and the best breakfast burrito this side of Galaxy Cafe :)
