First off, thanks to the Columbus Alive for putting this together! I had no idea this was in the works so to just see such a great guide to the city. Anyone else see this yet?

Looks like it's geared toward college students. Freshman students. Who have never been to Columbus before.

Yes that is my one criticism. I think it's unfortunate that it says anything about college students because I think if you took any sort of campus or student phrasing out of it, you wouldn't form that opinion. We're working on a new pocket guide for the Short North right now and have also talked about taking our Shop Short North retail organization city wide and doing a independent shopping version of Dine Originals. I think it would be amazing if we hooked up with EasyColumbus and had this larger guide and then more in-depth pocket guides to each neighborhood.

TT, I like all the side-projects you do. :)

Thanks Manatee! I do too. The independent shopping organization is actually the brain child of Kate at Undone.

I thought it was a great feature to acclimate students to the city--especially at OSU where most of the students have never experienced city living before.
My one criticism was how it furthered my neighborhood's identity crisis. At least half of the businesses featured in the "Grandview Heights" section are on 5th Avenue. I know that Fifth by Northwest never caught on as a neighborhood moniker, but I wish that the area could have a name that includes the city dwellers. "Grandview Area" perhaps, or "Near West Side" Or is that splitting hairs?

I actually thought that "5XNW" was one of the coolest neighborhood names to come about in the past few years. ;)
That being said, I still make mistakes about what is in Grandview and what is in 5XNW. Tough to not mix the two up.

RE: The Dispatch article on the matter
I was surprised to learn that C-bus has the 2nd highest ratio of students per capita in the nation, after Boston. After arguing against the notion that we're a college town for years, this sort of complicates my argument. On the other hand... if Boston isn't a college town, then is C-bus?

Otterbein, Capital, NOSU, Ohio Dominican, CSCC, and CCAD, yep, we are a college town....the Van Wilder ratio must be high here...

I actually didn't think they listed enough restaurants, bars, destinations, festivals, etc. with short descriptions. The bigger the lists, the more impressive the city would look and the more options the students would be aware of. Add a few more pages...whatever. Is it a cost thing? I'd just like to see it a little more "comprehensive". Either way, it was a great idea to do this. Now if the students only had a streetcar to ride downtown in. (sorry, could not help myself)

Less would probably be better, since some neighborhoods would leave visitors underwhelmed and/or rather uncomfortable with very little to do. I've been updating my neighborhood guide by including a "highlighted destinations" section with the names and addresses of local amenities. While I try to include as many local establishments as possible, I do omit some, especially bars where there are shootings/stabbings/homicides. That said, the easycolumbus guide was impressive, but I'm not happy that someone used one of my photos without crediting me. Really, it's not hard to get a good picture of bustling Grandview Ave.

It does wonders for place identity. Hell, dinky Midgard/Woodbine let's you know you're entering the area on all three streets that you enter into. The trick part about the boundaries is that both the north and south side of W 3rd Ave is 5XNW. GH starts immediately just south of the buildings along the southern portion of W 3rd. A good place to have 5XNW signs would be entrances on King, 5th, and 3rd, especially at NW blvd across the street from the "Grandview Heights" sign. A sign on Grandview Ave would also be great, but for practicality it's best to treat it as a sort of shared street like High in the Short North. In that case the neighborhood association should sign that it's Grandview Ave first and foremost, but should note that it's in the 5XNW neighborhood. A 5XNW guide for pickup at local businesses would also help, but signs are easier and very effective, since no one would have to set foot in any establishment to see what neighborhood they're in.

It's a great idea. I'm just curious why if this is powered by the Alive why the events calendar is so overrun with sports and there is zero art content. I guess it could be growing pains for now.

Hey guys - just a quick, small update. The 5xNW Commission is working on some signage. At the last commission meeting, they said it looks like it will be akin to the rocks w/plaques in Upper Arlington.
Also, there is some talk about what, if anything, can be done to the railroad overpasses leading into 5xNW to both clean them up, and also to incorporate some cool art-deco signage there announcing 5xNW. Fortin said they'd get in on it... but obviously the biggest challenge is doing anything to the overpasses themselves since they're owned by the railroad and still active.

Signage is ok. Lots of places have signage though.
Signature gateways are better. Everyone knows when you're in the Short North. Small signs can easily be ignored.
