Easton honored as a trendsetter

Easton Town Center has been named one of the five most innovative malls in the world, according to the trade publication Inside Retail.

Easton wasn’t the first town-center-style development, but “it brought the concept to a peak that has probably not been bettered anywhere,” said shopping-center expert Michael Baker in a blog entry. Baker compiled the list for the Australia-based publication.

“I’m often asked if it isn’t just another incarnation of the Continent,” Boring said, referring to the shopping center at the northern edge of Columbus’ city limits that once was one of the city’s top tourist attractions. “But the execution is so much stronger, along with much stronger financial backing.”

Whats your infatuation with the burbs? Are you just trying to get a rise out of people or what? When people think of a city they don't think of the burbs otherwise detroit would be looked at as a wonderful place because of troy,northville, and livonia. That's why its important to make sure your central core is strong because that impacts peoples perception of your city. Easton was a innovator in the town center/lifestyle concept which they should get credit for. That concept is becoming outdated already for new retail developments. Not saying its going to go away but there is certainly a movement for more urban retail in our country. I deal with this on a daily basis and retailers are always looking for the next big location and that trend is becoming more urban because they feel that is what the younger demographics is moving towards. I have no issue with suburban development but whether you agree or not it seems like that suburban malls are starting to lose their dominance on the american retail markets.

My point was if Easton was in the SN or Arena area the Downtown sheep would be praising it.

I can't stand Easton, I don't go and its not for me.

It is, however, absolutely fantastic for Central Ohio and I'm happy to have it in town.

ETA: btw, I think an argument could be made that Easton doesn't need to be in the SN...basically they created a Short North in the burbs and named it Easton.

It would be a little wierd as Easton is a faux 'downtown'. I think the Arena District could be seen as a large version of Easton without as much strict planning and management. The trick would be to incorporate more retail (in the AD), but it seems to be more focused on entertainment. I think the analogy with the AD is more appropriate as it was a much more planned and built neighborhood then the SN initially was.

Hmmm, sounds like the same reason the suburban folks avoid the SN.

Easton is fine. I'm not much of a "shopper" personally, so I generally go there for one or two specific things and get in and out. Which is quite easy to do if you have the flexibility to go there on a Tuesday at 10am. ;)

You mean if Downtown had 100s of retail stores and restaurants providing a walkable-friendly environment? Yes, it would be great there. Easton is great for what it is, and it wouldn't exactly work the same way Downtown, but the concept of having many businesses providing a destination is exactly the goal of Downtown's revitalization.

If you hate Easton, what do you do when you need to get something from Macy's? What about if you want to shop at any of the other hundreds of stores there? I get not wanting to leave the central city, I do it rarely, but the hate for Easton is a little ridiculous being that it is the only place in the city to find certain items.

first time i went to Easton,i thought it was a Continent ripoff as well.

i go to Easton for the restaurants,not the shopping.

You must not shop at Restoration Hardware, Crate and Barrel, Burberry, Coach, Tiffany's etc ... not to be found in the "urban" core.

I am just saying, I am an internet shopper as well, but if you need a polo shirt for a date tonight, the internet does not cut it. I hate malls as much as the next person here, but until High St turns into a 5th ave or a Michigan Ave. suburban style malls are in our future. I will take Easton over the other malls anyday of the week, at least it was different and groundbreaking when it was built, and offers stores that were never offered in Central Ohio before.

If I ever have a last minute must-fill need for a polo shirt, I'll be too busy blowing my brains out to go to Easton.
