Highly recommend this movie, particularly if you liked History of Violence. As a giant fan of the various TLC and A&E specials on the Russian mob, the portrayal seems really accurate. The performance by Viggo Mortensen is amazing. The brutality is a little hard to take at times, but necessary to the storytelling.
Great movie.

Yeah, both of those movies didn't do it for me. There just wasn't anything climatic or special in the plots of those two movies.
Viggo Mortensen is a damn good actor though. I hadn't seen much of his stuff before Lord of the Rings and didn't think much of him in those movies either. But his latest roles has really put him on my list of favorite actors. He's supposed to star as Edgar Allan Poe in one of his next roles.

Couple other roles he stood out to me earlier on:
Crimson Tide. Small role, but the scene where the captain is claiming he'll execute one of his co workers if he doesn't give him the nuclear key...great performance.
Carlito's Way: Lalin, the handicapped former associate of Carlito turned informant trying to set him up in the club.
Albino Alligator: GREAT movie, and he was really interesting in it.
I also liked American Yakusa...shhhhhh LOL

I think David Cronenberg walks on water, so of course I loved this film.

This arrived in the mail recently via netflix and I do not recall queing it up! (memory lapses, getting old)
I loved this movie. If you don't mind a bit of the 'ol ultra violence interspersed with great acting, good writing and excellent cinematography then this movie might be for you.
