Early-Morning Breakfast Places?
January 16, 2013 11:35 am at 11:35 am #95405
I am an early morning person, and I love breakfast! I’m sure everyone falls into these categories, naturally…
I can’t find any early-morning (5AM open time) places in/around Downtown/Short North.
I see that Tommy’s in Franklinton is open, so that is an option!January 16, 2013 12:42 pm at 12:42 pm #530046
There isn’t a whole lot open that early. Most early places seem to open at 6am (staff have to arrive and setup etc so not surprising). I have been to the Einstein Bagels at 743 S High Street before 6am and they were open. The typical fast food places are open as well and there is always Waffle House or Buckeye Donuts on Campus. TJ’s used to have a 24 hour place on Dublin Rd but it closed years ago – that used to get a lot of the downtown crowd (especially at 3am).January 16, 2013 1:13 pm at 1:13 pm #530047
I have always thought a 24 hour diner would be great to have in the SN or downtown.January 16, 2013 2:04 pm at 2:04 pm #530048

Maybe the closest thing to downtown/short north would be Waffle House on campus. Buckeye Donuts doesn’t serve breakfast until 7.January 16, 2013 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #530050
Nice! Didn’t realize they open at 5:30am on weekdays. (Not that I’m ever up that early)January 16, 2013 3:03 pm at 3:03 pm #530051
If I could tag Breakfast with Nick on here, I would.January 16, 2013 3:06 pm at 3:06 pm #530052
the Breakfast Barn on Brown Rd. opens at 5am.January 16, 2013 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #530053
Isn’t the TeeJay”s on Parsons open 24 hours?January 16, 2013 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm #530054
Thanks for the plug, Donnie!
Aside from some of the 24-hour joints like TeeJaye’s (I think all of them are 24/7), Buckeye Donuts, and Waffle House, it’s hard to find things that are open super early. Like someone said, Breakfast Barn and Tommy’s open at 5:30, but the closest thing to SN/downtown is probably going to be DK Diner. They have a solid diner breakfast, plus some of the best donuts in town.
Most other spots open by 6:30/7: de-NOVO bistro & bar (an under-appreciated bfast, IMO), Cup O’ Joe downtown, Danny’s Deli, Lexi’s on Third, and Jack’s Diner open at 7, as does Tasi in Short North. In the Ohio Union is Sloopy’s Diner, which is basic but kinda fun, also open at 7.
I know there’s been a lot of talk of a 24-hour diner in Short North. I think Liz and/or Tim Lessner have talked about opening one. That would be a dream come true for me.January 16, 2013 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #530055
Marshalls has a solid breakfast, I believe they are open at 7am Tues-Friday, 8am Saturday-SundayJanuary 16, 2013 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm #530056
Right @ricospaz! I always forget them. And Paul’s on Fifth Avenue opens at 6am.January 16, 2013 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #530057
Great ideas, but most of these are pretty far from where I live, and I work in the opposite direction (NE side)…
I would love to see a diner pop up in the SN!
That would probably work out pretty well.January 16, 2013 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #530058
Backstage Bistro (yes, the one in Shadowbox) is open for breakfast by 6:30. I’d count that as Downtown.January 17, 2013 12:26 pm at 12:26 pm #530059
I need 5AM-ers!
