Day one of the Dublin Irish Festival was really amazing. The heat and humidity dissipated and we were left with beautiful festival weather.
The Festival Stout was everything that 3M TA3 said it was. It was wildly popular with the crowd as well. So many glasses and mugs were filled with this dark and tasty libation.
My Bizarre Foods moment of the day was when I ordered the Scottish delicacy Haggis. This award winning version was made with lamb's liver, barley and spices - tumeric maybe? Topped on a bed of fries, this was super delicious. If Liz could add a Haggis Dog to the Dirty Franks's lineup, I'd be a happy man. Tom of Jeni's Ice Cream was buzzing around. I jokingly said that they should make an Irish Stout ice cream, and he blew me away when he said they were selling it at the festival! The three scoops I ate were delicious. It's good with the stout poured on top, too.
I eventually made my way to the Killian's Celtic Rock stage in anticipation of Gaelic Storm, bumping into friends along the way. I would soon find that it was a lot more difficult to get a good view this year. They installed a barrier that blocks close access, and eliminated several feet of floor space. Additionally, there were gobs of folding chairs near the front of the stage for whatever reason. All I can say is, that if someone wants to sit down during a Gaelic Storm concert, they should move there butts to the back of the stage. Yawn....WTF!
There were a lot of really cool people around me pushing their way up to center stage, past the passive ones in the chairs. We kind of forgot all about our sardine-like closeness when the music started. A youtube video or a CD just doesn't do these guys justice. They are so energizing and fun when you get to see them live. There's nothing like singing and dancing to their music with a few thousand others. And Patrick Murphy really knows how to work a crowd, and get them fired up.
I came away with a cool t shirt, some great memories and a lot of photos. I'll post a few over the next few days. I hope you all enjoy the festival this year.
