Um..shouldn't this be in place for all 52 weeks of the year?

"Drug Free Workplace Week is Oct 19 to Oct 23"

It is dedicated to reminding city employees that each week we can work toward a drug free workplace.

Having a drug free workplace benefits us all by:

Preventing accidents and making the workplace safer
Improving productivity and reducing costs
Encouraging people with alcohol and drug problems to seek help early through the City EAP at 645-6894.

Our drug free workplace program helps protect city employees from the potentially devastating consequences of worker alcohol and drug abuse.[i]"

On the job I fully understand this thought. However when we let a job tell us how to act in our personal life outside of work it goes overboard fast.

Seems extreme. I can't even imagine not being able to drink caffeinated coffee in the workplace.

A few jobs ago I was surprised that I wasn't required to take a drug test so I asked the boss why they didn't do it. His response was "You kidding me? If I started testing I'd have to fire EVERYONE."

This actually leads me to a whole new proposition.

I was in Toronto over the weekend. They have BYOB (Bring Your Own Bud) Cannabis Cafes. Legit and all in the open.

Mmmm.. (clearing my throat) Mmm Hmm...

If we want to generate revenue and attract and retain. No on the casino and yes to BYOB cafes? :)

The most recent job I had never tested me for drugs, and that was very unusual because in the IT world a drug test is taken for granted.

Oh well, people have been fired for testing positive for nicotine.

Are you serious? I've never heard of this in IT (but I've been at the same company for 15 years). Wow, it's not like folks in IT are driving heavy machinery.

You kidding?

Most of the jobs I've had included pre-employment and random drug testing ( all IT: Oracle DBA, Solaris sysadmin, MS SQL DBA, perl coder, et. al. ).

Only one that didn't openly tolerated on the job drug use; they considered it a cost savings benefit, since the users would have a hard time finding a new job since they'd fail the drugs test. Yes, that place was hell to work at.

As a non-user, legalization makes a lot of sense. The war on drugs is largely a failure in the same way prohibition of alcohol was a failure. Why not legalize and tax it?

IIRC it was Scotts lawn care service in Maryland that fired for nicotine, and Scotts has a no-nicotine poicy in general. I might be mistaken but I think if you test positive you're sent to some kind of counseling, similar to the use of other drugs.

But if you count nicotine and caffiene as drugs, my second-to-last job was a drug den. They would mock you for making a pot of coffee with only one packet, and they repeatedly tore down the NO SMOKING signs outside the back door. They didn't seem to get drunk or stoned, they were more like the mail sorter in Men In Black II.

My results in IT have been mixed. Most places do, some don't. Mostly I see pre-employment and I've never seen random. I have to say given the choice I'd prefer to work for places that stay out of the personal business of adults. On the whole though, pre-employment drug screening is more of an intelligence test than a drug test.

One place I worked at instituted testing as part of a contract for a local bank. My manager called me to ask me how far in advance I wanted to schedule my testing. He recommended that I take as much time as I need.
