I realize most of the readers here probably have iphones, but I'm a verizon subscriber facing a the dillema over whether or not to get the droid (i'm up for a phone discount on my contract) or wait, possibly many months, for the nexus one. I'm a google app addict, so it's one or the other. Anybody already done the research and have an informed opinion on this? Thanks in advance.

I have the Droid right now and I absolutely love it. It has come through with every single thing that I've had to use it for with some pretty amazing speed.
My wife has the HTC Imagio as comparison, and her phone seems sluggish and choppy whereas the Droid is completely smooth.
The ONLY bad thing I have to say about it is the battery life. If you're using it a fair amount, you're going to have to charge it pretty much every day.
Either way though, the Android OS is where it's at.

Personally I'm waiting for Nexus Six...
j/k
Seriously, there will be plenty of Android phones coming out over the course of the next year, and of course the software will mature. I'd wait.
I'm currently using a Nokia E71, and as soon as Nokia switches from Symbian to Android, I'll probably be getting a new phone. Unless something more awesome pops up first. I recall looking at the G1 and deciding that the hardware was too boxy for what I wanted. The N1 looks pretty nice and sleek and the Droid seems to have a physical keyboard if you're into that (I am).
As I understand it, you can buy the N1 unlocked for $530, so that might work if Verison is GSM (no clue if they are).
Overall I'm a fan of waiting for phones to mature a generation or two and letting others suffer through the bugs (been there done that). Also, there will be a lot more development for the android phones as time goes on, and for sure more handsets (I've heard over 30 handsets will be released worldwide over the next year), so expect the choices to look a lot better in 6 months.

Depends if you want a qwerty board or all touch device? Would you rather have a motorola or HTC made phone? The N1 is sleek, fast and a nice summation of everything that's great about Android. I've found Droids to be a little behind the times since the real future of smart phoning for non business users is based in all touch technology. I WOULD get the N1 on Verizon though. TMobile's data network is spotty. I run into that all the time in Columbus and even in other large cities.
If you're looking for speed, design aesthetic and Google's spin in on things, the N1 is great. Think of it this way, the N1 does everything the Droid does, only better. :P

@michaelcoyote: Thanks. Verizon is not GSM - Google says they'll be releasing a verizon version sometime in spring (right now it's either unlocked or t-mobile). I totally here you about waiting for the technology to mature. I just kinda want/need something now as my current phone is half dead.
@android: thanks. I've heard the lack of touch features is an issue with droid.

I really like my G1 though the Android operating system is starting to push its capabilities. While the touchscreen can do nearly everything, the key board is indispensable for business usage - I have written full documents waiting while at my son's baseball practice. Very solid integration with docs and Exchange.
I had to get a 3rd party battery to make up for relatively weak battery which makes it a little bulkier than I'd like. I do run the phone pretty heavily between a frequent Exchange sync, RSS reader, Twitter and a couple of other things.
T-Mobile's 3G is weirdly spotty in Columbus but not in major metro areas. I have no had any issues with overall coverage in Columbus but Verizon is better in rural Ohio. T-Mobile's customer service - at least for business customers - is unparalleled (we've dealt with everyone over our biz time.) Everyone I have talked to has been knowledgeable and empowered to help as well as downright friendly. They've helped my wife with an unlocked Tilt as well. Aside from my experience, surveys have rated them tops.

I have the same phone and service as Andrew Hall. I share his opinion that the form factor (full keyboard) is excellent for my needs, as I too have composed documents at daughter's dance class.

Yeah, agree with racheltb & andrewhall on the g1 design. Touch + Keyboard is how I want to go, but I want to wait until they can make them slightly less bricklike.
I'm guessing in the next year there will be a thinner version of the g1 or a phone that improves upon it. I've gotten really used to the super thin e71 and it's going to be hard to go back to a thicker form factor (carried around a p990 for 2 years, no more).
I'll also concur on the observations of T-Mobile customer service. They've been great every time I've needed them.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna make the jump to the Nexus One when it hits Verizon this spring. I'm just tired of TMobile's spotty network. The N1 is a fantastic phone inside and out. But, with any smart phone, you need a solid 3G network to really enjoy it, unless you're around wi-fi. HTC makes great phones. I have a My Touch 3G and I love it. Motorola is a player too, but Google's user interface is gorgeous and the sleekness of the HTC handset really makes it attractive.

It's official. The iPhone comes to Verizon. Rollout date is 2/10/11. My next new phone comes in late March. I guess I will have to decide whether I want to go Droid or iPhone soon.
