I attended a convention last year in another city and there was no hotel at all attached to the event space. Everyone attending stayed in unconnected hotels. And I didn't hear anyone complaining.

Hell, I'd rather not look at that monstrosity if I was a guest staying at the hotel and going to the convention center. The west side is going to be plenty vibrant with the hotel traffic, NM, Barley's, Knead, Deepwood, and possibly Flip Side.
I agree that the Convention Center needs a sidewalk-facing makeover with retail included...
...but that's a completely different argument. The addition of the skywalk doesn't make any difference there.

It's all about options. Not all convention attendees will use the sidewalks and not all will use the skywalk. But in order to be more competitive in the convention business, the skywalk is a necessary addition IMO. The skywalk is not for us, but for hotel attendees who are looking for an affordable, fun and convenient convention experience.

I feel as if there's 4 inches of snow outside, people would rather take the skywalk and vice versa. If it's 87 degrees and sunny, people will rather walk outside.

The Gallerie Bar & Bistro Arriving Downtown in October

Hopefully the skywalk will have some type of added flare similar, but different to the sky walk that connects the Nationwide structure with the Hyatt Hotel and Convention Center. I think the screens and lighting effects have added immensly to Front and High Streets. Hopefully the same will happend with the structure to the North. :)

seems like i heard it was going to have steam valves aimed at the sidewalk to keep people from hanging out underneath to check out the skirts/dresses passing overhead. They could add some sort of laser show to take advantage of the vapor clouds.
