Downtown grows up

For the longest time, when Columbus residents talked about Downtown neighborhoods, they meant German Village or the Short North. That’s no longer true as the city core develops into a real neighborhood, with 24-hour occupants and a sense of community.

In the '80s when I was a boy, there were more run down buildings, but the main thing was that it was sleepy after hours. It still didn't have as much decay as many other cities of the time.

A lot of people would say that's exactly what it is right now, and to some degree they're right. There's still a long way to go.
That being said, there has *always* been reasons to be proud of Downtown. Those reasons just vary from person to person.
If you're only feeling it now in Oct 2011 because The Dispatch said it's ok, then by all means go right ahead and feel proud from here on out. ;)

You know, I wonder if the would be able to fill the Columbia Gas of Ohio HQ? Of course that is two maybe three years away. Its not like the move would be over night. Would it be torn down? I support Sears. I know many people who shop there, including most of my family. I support the move.

Either way this Sears business won't be a victory for our region or country. Moving jobs is not gaining jobs. How about we invest $400 million in rail, Oh wait.....

Sears abandoned their own Sears Tower in Downtown Chicago in 1993 to relocate to a new suburban office campus in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
If Sears does move to Ohio, they're going to be looking for the Ohio version of Hoffman Estates, not Downtown Columbus, Cleveland or Cincinnati.

I wish they would build like 3 400 story buildings in downtown Columbus. But thats just a dream.

Another point to consider in Downtown's favor is that the Sears move to the suburbs has generally been considered a big mistake by the company as it made access and infrastructure problems a big concern.

Chicago has been an example of the downfall of the suburban office park. They certainly still exist, but several big companies that left the downtown to go waste as much space as possible in the suburbs have now relocated, or partially relocated, back downtown. Their young workforce tends to pick jobs based on the "cool factor"... which downtown has, and the suburbs do not. This trend is going to continue, so really it just depends on how in touch the higher ups are with what the young professionals want.
