This article doesn't really jibe with the 2010 Downtown Development Plan, but good to hear that there is a renewed focus on near-Downtown neighborhoods including Franklinton and Weinland Park:

It has been almost 200 years in the making. Is Downtown finally done? A riverfront renaissance, a shopping mall-turned-park, a new county courts building and a series of re-engineered and redesigned streets all are scheduled to be completed between late May and the fall.

That will be it for a while, according to city officials. With the exception of state highway projects and a few things going up in surrounding neighborhoods, you won't see as many construction cranes or orange barrels in the heart of Columbus.

This proves what I was saying all along... "Columbus downtown development" was just a dummy excuse to funnel money into the black-ops takedown of bin Laden.

Makes sense. After several years of letting the current downtown projects sink in, the city will probably go back and start to focus more on the downtown plan. (hopefully)

Meanwhile, the city could continue working on ways to fund and make the downtown plan projects possible.

From the perspective of "The City", I think they've made a fair amount of public investment into infrastructure and amenities, so it does make sense to back off of that for awhile, as the purpose of it is to encourage private-sector development (which we are seeing some of in the various hotel projects, Columbia Gas, Children's Hospital, etc).

I imagine that turning their attention away from these types of projects for awhile doesn't mean that there won't be a continued effort on public-private partnerships and tax incentives for private developers who want to bite off different pieces of the 2010 Downtown Development plan.

uhhhh whoever did the graphic for the Dispatch put the courthouse on the wrong block.

It's west of High not east of it. Unless they built on the park without me realizing it.

This article sounds like a PR change for the mayor's office gearing up for election time more than an actual change in strategy. I think they've been hearing complaints that downtown gets all the attention. Some of the campaigns I've seen for city council candidates etc seem to hint at that in their platforms.

The uncertainty over the upcoming decade or so of Split work impairing access to downtwon probably doesn't entice much development dollar excitement either at the moment.
