Ah... When I worked emergency mgmt in NYC, responsibility was always an area of contention between FDNY and NYPD. So quite frequently at package jobs, you'd see a cop arrest a fireman for interfering with a crime scene. knuckleheads.

Heard that there can be some pissing matches here too, but not seen it. Either way, Fire has the kit and techs for bomb disposal while Police doesn't.

I was driving home last week and was behind a bright new shiny vehicle that said something like "Bomb Disposal Unit #2"

Is there really enough to keep two busy?

I'm guessing the bomb threats are feeding off each other.
Last year I saw an abanondoned duffel bag while walking my dog in Schiller park. No one ws around so I opened it up enough to check for ID. There was some so I was calling the guys home when I saw a police car. I flagged him down and he pciked up the bag and agreed to take it to the owner. (that was kind of nice. In new york or chicago the police wouldnt do this.)

The thought of a bomb didnt enter my mind. I'm guessing that now that someone saw a suspect bag was in the news people are now thinking bomb threat rather than lost luggage.

Probably so if one breaks down, gets in an accident, needs maintenance or...God forbid...gets blown up, they'll have another at the ready. It's not like you go to Ricart to get a bomb van like that. You can get a bomb ass van, but not a bomb van.

In the event that anyone actually wanted to really try something, yes. That day they might very well need 4-5 bomb vans.

Think about it. If you really wanted to be a terrorist would you only plant one bomb? One of the biggest fears of bomb techs is the double or triple bombing. The first device is a decoy to get the bomb squad out, the second is hidden nearby to take out the bomb squad, and the third (4th, 5th) would be at the actual targets on the other side of town.

(they've actually conducted large scale drills of similar scenarios here in town)

I'm not even a terrorist and I can easily conceive of a plan like this. I can only imagine what someone who actually WANTS to blow something up would think of.

Target 1: Target rich environment. Pedestrians preferred ( no intervening cover ). Device is either high or low explosive, but shrapnel imperative as multiple disabling wounds is desirable. Think pipe bomb connected to small propane cylinders hidden in a trash can near a crowded patio.

Target 2: Medical / emergency personal. High explosive. Shrapnel secondary. Think nitroglycerin / dynamite / semtex / c4 / etc. hidden in a trash dumpster across the street from target 1, set to go off 10 - 20 min after target 1 charge fires.

"Secondary Device Method" used in Algeria, Columbia, Chechnya, et. al. . Not exactly unknown.

It's nice to know that OSHA's first example was one exploded outside a 'family planning clinic'.

I remember watching a documentory before 9/11 about the possibility of using a dirty mini-nuke. The documentory used wind direction, buildings, ect. to show what effects placing it where would have on Chicago. After all the simulations they were able to determine exactly where you could do the most damage to the city. And the ways you could get it there without detection.

I'm thinking to myself; "Why are they broadcasting this!?"

Huh didn't see this thread last month.

The bomb truck has a big 2 on it because its kept at Station 2.

There is more than one bomb truck, older ones that only get brought out when the main is in the shop, or if a run gets called in from out of the county (since the Columbus Bomb Squad covers all of eastern and southern Ohio as well.)
