Hello all. I am looking to "leave the nest" sometime late this year or early next year and have been looking at metro-rentals.com and craigslist.org for listings. I have found quite a few nice listings in and around OTE, the Short North, northern Campus, Clintonville, and Grandview among others. I am curious as to what the OTE area is like. I had a friend who lived down there for a few months and he said he felt very safe and what not. What do you guys all have to say about OTE??? Does anyone know of any other good resources for apartment hunting in Columbus akin to craigslist and metro-rentals??? Thanks all!!!

I have found that driving around the area your interested in is a good resource, by doing so you will sometimes come across a ma and pop type of rental which is cheaper and sometimes not advertised. However by doing the drive by you get to see the outside as to if you would be interested, then you could schedule a view of the inside. Oh and always look in drawers and cabinets. Pull out a bottom drawer and look behind as needed for any droppings or roaches.

I'm all for driving to pick up a lot of local numbers in a hurry, but to really get the feel of a neighborhood, you have to walk it. You're insulated from a lot of the real feel of a neighborhood when you're in your car. I'd also advise walking it sometime later than just your lunch hour, too. I ruled out a few neighborhoods based on how they felt just getting out of my car in them after dark.

Keep in mind that OTE is a very large area and can vary quite a bit from street to street sometimes. I feel safe in most parts of it, but any neighborhood requires a bit of "urban awareness".

I have had great luck with wood companies. You should give them a call, tell them what you're looking for. Great landlords so far.

I've lived in OTE for 5 years and really like it. Like Walker said, its a large area and can go from good to bad in a block. You can usually tell the bad areas by driving down the street. If you don't feel comfortable there in your car, you probably won't feel comfortable sleeping there.
I had really good luck renting two differert apartments from F&W Properties, you might check them out.
If you're looking to buy in OTE, call Joe Peffer.

I'd say OTE is a great neighborhood to buy - the homes are beautiful and with some work and time, the place has a shot at being great again. If you're renting, you don't have any equity in the neighborhood, so you deal with the problems of an improving area without seeing the long term benefits (appreciation of home values.) I'd look in a more established neighborhood that has the amenities you want rather than waiting for them to show up in OTE.

On the north side of Town, just before Parsons/71 there is a set of apartments called the Belmont. I looked at those and would definitely consider them. Unfortunately when I looked at them, my mom was still in her overprotective, neurotic state and couldn't believe I would live there. Right on the edge of OTE, if that is what you are looking for, decent price, decent floor plan.
