My wife and I were waiting for a table at Tip Top last night and decided to go for a walk down the street to check out the Neighborhood Launch project. Just as we were both commenting on how much we liked the design of Gay Street and the architectural style of the project, we crossed from the south side to the north side of Gay Street at Young Street and noticed a distict smell of sanitary sewage? Smelling sewage is a deal-breaker when it comes to living anywhere, so I was wondering if it always smells like that.

that is the smell of old sewer infrastructure. There are combined sanitary/poop and storm sewers all over downtown and in the older areas around downtown, the smell is worse when there is little rainfall, and when it gets colder and hotter.

yeah, GV some mornings can be pretty rancid too.

So not always, but it is a persistant problem in many parts of town?

parts of the SN are intense, the entrance to Goodale Park usually smells like a steaming pile, Glen Echo ravine after a big rain was horrible, supposedly the problem has been fixed....you can call sewers and drains and see when they plan to seperate the stormwater from the combined/poop sewers in your area, they are mandated to fix them all by 2030 or so....

This is why I currently don't live in GV. Beautiful place, smells like caca. :(

At least we have dumpster service, unlike NYC. I've heard horror stories about that city in the summer.

You'll notice a sign at North Bank park warning people to stay away from the water due to combined sewer overflows.

To see where the overflow outlets are, and their discharge histories:

And yet people pay lots of money to live in German Village. I used to work in a restaurant there and before TONS of sewer work under our building, it was almost unbearable sometimes.
And there are days where the smell outside of the starbucks in GV will just about bowl you over.

I work in the Brewery District and there are days that it REAKS of butt as early as 6:30 in the morning when I make my walk up S High to Livingston...totally gnarly thing is the smell will creep up you on you too- fine when I step off the bus, walk 2 blocks and bam! it is like I walked into a wall of turds. GV definitely has that odor going on as well. I have to say that I have not noticed it before on Gay street, or central downtown, unless you are in the basement somewhere.

GV only smells on certain street corners. Mohawk and Kossuth is the worst.

Yeah, the smell is intermittent in a lot of places. I think the only places I've smelled it with real consistency is the corner of Spring & Marconi and at one or two certain corners in GV. I don't think I've ever smelled it on Gay Street.
There was talk of a "fix" a few years ago:

Not sure if that project ever got underway (I've not heard any updates) but that article makes it sound like the project should be wrapped in a few months. I'll see if I can get in touch with someone to see if that is still happening or not...

I missed this thread before, but have def. noticed it in the GV area. Planks on High always slightly smells of sewer. It's worse at the video store on Livingston, and sometimes at 185 also.

I love the fact that in the Dispatch comments section, someone managed to mention that the biofilters cost as much as light rail from downtown to Worthington. Awesome!
